DANIEL C. SCHAFFER

Dan was a great success as husband to my niece, Sally. He is so missed, not only by Sally, but all the rest of us too. Rest in peace, Dan.

I had Dan as a professor at Northeastern. I was very lucky that he agreed to supervise me on an independent study project and I learned an incredible amount about taxation and nonprofit law from him. Dan was a kind, funny and intelligent man who touched my life and I will never forget his help and his kindness. The legal community has lost a great mind and wonderful person who will be greatly missed.

Dan was my colleague for more than forty years. He was a great teacher. It was my good fortune that early in our careers he agreed to co-author an article involving tax and environmental law. I can't recall any activity which I found more instructive. Although it was not his primary goal, he taught me, as he would teach hundreds of students, how to do rigorous legal analysis. As many of his students can attest, no one did it better.

I taught with Dan for almost thirty years. He had a restless , probing and fascinatingly quirky mind, a wide range of intellectual curiosity and a delightful wry sense of humor. He lived simultaneously in the clouds and on terra firma and managed to be equally at home in both places. I shall miss him.

So many fond and memories of kind and gentle Dan. He made going out of his way feel as though it was on his way. Dan truly left his world better than he found it in big and small ways. I regret that I will not be able to join you at the Chapel for the service, because I will be doing exactly what Dan loved most -- I will be with students, in this instance, (I and several others who I am sure would like to be there to support Sally and the family), getting them ready for co-op with the Pathways training.
