Dear Elaine -- just this weekend had a discussion about working for Michigan Lawyers Weekly way back when and what a wonderful boss Dan was -- and decided to do a Google search to find out where he was -- and landed on this very unhappy page. I am so sorry I did not know earlier. Dan was such a blessing to all who knew him and I feel privileged to have worked for him and to have learned so much not only about legal reporting but how to create a working environment which was both competitive, full of pressure, yet compassionate and humorous. I hope you are doing OK wherever you are.

I had the privilege of trying a civil rights case with Dan and Elaine in Maine a few years ago. Dan was brilliant, low key, and gave one of the best cross exams i've ever witnessed- all while battling cancer. Although he was visibly exhausted at the end of each day, he never complained. His performances, and deep knowledge of constitutional law, were spellbinding

Dan was far too young. He was very brave and self effacing. Most importantly, he retained his great sense of humor during his ordeal. I still can't believe he was able to participate in the trial, and do so well, while struggling with cancer. My thoughts and prayers are with Elaine and Dan's family...God Bless-

I was so saddened to learn of Dan's death. He was a wonderful friend to me when we both worked at the Michigan Capitol. I always thought that sometime in the future our paths would cross again. Please accept my deepest sympathy. I can only imagine how much you must miss his wry humor, quit wit and upbeat attitude. He was one of those people in my life who I will always remember fondly and for whom tonight I have shed more than a few tears.

I worked at Michigan Lawyers Weekly (and for Lawyers Weekly Publications in general) from 1992-2004. I never knew Dan personally, but always heard stories about him and his days as publisher. I came on board at Michigan Lawyers Weekly after graduating from law school in May 1992. At the time, Dan was in transition between Michigan Lawyers Weekly and the LW corporate office in Boston. I only saw him a few times, and met him once. I always heard great things about him. My condolences to the family.

“…grief is like the wake behind a boat. It starts out as a huge wave that follows close behind you and is big enough to swamp and drown you if you suddenly stop moving forward. But if you do keep moving, the big wake will eventually dissipate. And after a long enough time, the waters of your life get calm again, and that is when the memories of those who have left begin to shine as bright and as enduring as the stars above.”

Dan was publisher of MLW when I was hired as a reporter in 1992. He and Ed Wesoloski were responsible for some of the best work that MLW has ever done. It was a privilege to work with them. Godspeed, Dan.

Dan and I had a number of pleasant interactions during my service on the Bar Journal Advisory Board, of which I was the chair while he was starting MLW. He kept us looking over our shoulder at the competition, and for that reason he can take (indirect) credit for the many innovations that we have implemented at the Journal over the years. I was saddened to learn of his passing, and extend sincere condolences to his family, especially to Elaine.

I'm so sorry to hear about his passing. I will miss helping Dan create another "Rube Goldberg" device to trim the hedges from above, or helping to dig out from 36 inches of snow from my first nor'easter. I'm so sorry I won't be able to be there for the funeral, but my thoughts will be there with you.

Elaine,
I am so sorry for your loss. You are both champions! You, as his wife, fought so hard to provide him with all the medical services he so greatly needed. Our meeting filled me with the love you had for Dan. You were so determined to keep him on this earth. I know how he wanted that so much, too! He was quite a fighter in his own right. Dan had a greater calling.

It is time for you to heal and take care of yourself. Know in your heart you did everything for Dan. That is what spouses do.

Elaine and All:
I only had the pleasure of enjoying Dan through Elaine's eyes, but I know he was a magnificent creature. I grief for Elaine and his family, but I am also very sad for myself - that I never had the pleasure of knowing him firsthand. Dan leaves a rich legacy. The absence of Dan's physical presence does not suggest that Dan will be absent.
I send my most sincere condolences.
