Today I rewatched 'My Octopus Teacher' and thought of Dr. Shrager who first mentioned this documentary to me. I was a patient then in Pittsburgh and for a time in Florida. He was a wonderful doctor and a joy to talk with. He was a person who remains long in memory.

To the Shrager family and to everyone involved in any way in the mental health community: I'm so very sorry for the loss of one of the greatest psychiatrists I have ever known. Dan was my first clinical supervisor when I began my clinical social work career in community mental health. With a shiny new degree and very little experience, I was always able to trust that Dan would be available to share what he knew with me, to step in and rescue when I was working with someone I was too inexperienced to help, and to encourage and guide me, when needed, in every mental/behavioral health job I worked in after that initial period of clinical supervision he provided me with.

To the Shrager family thank you for sharing Dr. Shrager with all his patients but especially me. He got me through some very difficult times by listening and caring! He told me it´s ok to have depressed and anxious times but not to let it control my life. He will be missed by many but his legacy will live on

What a beautiful human being. Dr. Shrager was level headed with such a kind demeanor. Nothing was off base or out of line when speaking with him. There was never a problem or obstacle that couldn't be overcome without patience and persistence. His knowledge of life and people always made you feel you were an instrument of something much bigger. God bless you my friend. I will always think of you and smile when in need of guidance. My thoughts and prayers go out to you and your family at this time.

“Oh, the comfort, the inexpressible comfort of feeling safe with a person; having neither to weigh thoughts nor measure words, but to pour them all out, just as they are, chaff and grain together, knowing that a faithful hand will take and sift them, keep what is worth keeping, and then, with a breath of kindness, blow the rest away.” ~ George Eliot
Rest in Peace, Dr. Shrager. May comfort and peace be with your family at this difficult time.

Sue Schwab with love and respect. I know our work together is ironically what will get me through this heartache. Your legacy will carry on.
Thank you to his family who shared him with so many. My condolences
