Daniel Stephen "Steve" Saunders Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Oct. 25, 2023.
Daniel Stephen "Steve" Saunders, 72, of McKinney, TX, passed away on October 19, 2023, after a brief illness. He was born on September 1, 1951, to Mary Frances Saunders and Daniel Stephan Saunders.

Steve had an illustrious career that spanned several decades, making significant contributions in various fields. From his early days at the Environmental Protection Agency to his retiring position as Vice President of Food Safety at Frito-Lay, Steve's dedication and expertise were unmatched. After his retirement, he enjoyed pouring his knowledge into the next generation as a respected Professor at Lees McRae College in Banner Elk, NC, and Collin College in McKinney, TX.

Steve was a proud alumnus of both the University of Florida, where he earned his Bachelor's degree, and the University of North Carolina, where he received his Ph.D. He loved cheering on his Gators during football season, and the Tarheels during basketball season.

Music was always Steve's happy place. Whether he was playing his bass guitar for a crowd with the Holla Band in the '80s, strumming one of his 6-string Rickenbackers at home, or jamming to the Beatles and The Who in the car, music was always at his core. However, his favorite kind of noise came from his 5 rambunctious grandchildren, who brought him the most joy of all.

Steve leaves behind his beloved wife, Andi, who stood by his side for 42 years. He will be deeply missed by his children, Brad (Amy) Saunders and Chrissie (Dan) Jones, and his grandchildren, Lila, Keller, Quinn, Everly, and Camden. Steve is also survived by his siblings Jane, Sandy, Karen, and Mark.

A memorial service will be held on Friday, November 3, at 10:00 am at Christ Fellowship McKinney, Steve's church home. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to Christ Fellowship, as a testament and honor to Steve's faith.
