Thanks for the memories.
I had the enormous privilege to see him in several NBA games. His kindness, humor and the honorable treatment to the players were simply amazing.
Garretson lives forever. Thank you.

Ron: Sorry to hear about the loss of your father. In the spring of 1977, he was the major focus of a three-part piece I wrote on NBA officials for the San Francisco Examiner. I visited with him at the house in Orange County, and he was exceptionally gracious and helpful. The series included a great story on how he had to T Bob Lanier for hanging on the rim - - which then came with a $100 fine - - but wrote a note to the league asking that Bob not be penalized, since the big guy was holding on because poor Quinn Buckner was lying on the floor right below. Your Dad showed me a copy of the thank-you note from Lanier. Way cool. I always watched the game differently after visiting with your Dad and a couple of his colleagues. Keep up the fine tradition. Best wishes . . .

Mrs Garretson, Rick and Ron,
I have so many fond memories with your family as a young girl. Both Mr and Mrs G treated me like a daughter.
My heart goes out to you at this time and in the days ahead.

I am so sorry to hear of your loss. I was Darell's FedEx courier for years, and still remember his kind comments and smiling face. I think of him whenever I watch an NBA game, and of his wonderful contributions to officiating. My thoughts and prayers are with all of you.

Mrs. "G", Rick and Ron,
It was my priviledge to have a charmed childhood surrounded by your special family. I will always remember Mr. "G"'s exuberant personality, presense as he entered a room, love for classic cars and his undying unconditional love for his sons.
In heart felt sympathy,

Darell Garretson was one of the best officials in basketball. I have watched NBA ball here in Phoenix since the incorporation of the Suns. I would hope that all officials learn that it is important to treat players with dignity and fairness like Mr. Garretson did. Thanks goodness for the inventiveness of the 3 man official crew that he helped implement. His passing is certainly a loss to all NBA fans.

Aunt Jeannie, Rick and Ron: I was sadden by the news of Uncle Darell's passing. Though we never stayed in touch once we got older, I will always remember the trips to California to see Uncle Darell and the family. I will also remember those times when he was in Chicago and would stop by our house or my grandma's to surprise us. I remember him as a loving and caring man, who will be greatly missed by both his family, friends and the public. My heart goes out to you in this time of sorrow.

To the family of Darell,
Ray and Ty Sanders of Washington, IL, formerly of Rutland and Streator, IL, would like to extend our sympathy to the family. Darell was the best man at our wedding in 1951. Darell and Ray played baseball together, Ray as pitcher for Long Point and Darell at first base. Darell fixed us up for our very first date in 1950. We've been together 56 years so obviously he did a good job in the role of cupid for us. Again, our sympathy is extended.

Darell, goodbye to a the man whose integrity and work ethic created what NBA officiating is today. You were always approachable and friendly whenever we met, and did your high exposure job without an ego and with amazing humor. You will be missed.
