I loved her as a teacher and human being! I just learned of her passing as I was thinking about my most inspiring teachers. She even invited me to her home to help me with advanced theory!

Darlene was a bright shining light to all she encountered. Ever happy, positive, warm and funny, always a joy to spend time with her! Feel so blessed to have had the privilege of her company for so many days the last few years. Darlene was a gem, one of a kind.

Although our paths had not crossed in years, I still thought of her often and the impact she made on my life. She was an amazing teacher and mentor. Godspeed Ms. Dugan and thank you from myself and all of the other students whose lives you touched.

"Miss Dugan" was my college flute professor and WMFA director for many years. But she was also a friend to us all. She loved others so well and genuinely cared to hear about our lives. I will never forget her lilting laughter.
Her legacy lives on in the hearts of many passionate flutists

Darlene Dugan was a household name in our family. My oldest sister, Camilla Hoitenga, a former student and friend for over 50 years, went in to be a world class flutist centered in Cologne, Germany. Darlene's spirit will definitely live on in her beloved students and friends. What a great legacy!

Darlene Dugan was my flute teacher when she first came to Grand Rapids and I was in high school. She was a great teacher and person - part of my inspiration to become a music teacher and music therapist myself. I have thought of her often to this day when attending symphony concerts in Grand Rapids and Kalamazoo. My thoughts and prayers are with her family.
