I had the pleasure of working under Cpl Berg this past summer.
He shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old.
Please accept my deepest sympathies.

Dear Gary, Jill and Rachel,
Our thoughts are with you at this unimaginably difficult time. We are sorry we never had the opportunity to meet and get to know Darren. Clearly he was a remarkable young man; a good friend, and a person to live life to the fullest. A son and brother one could feel proud of forever. As part of your extended family, our families are linked together. We felt blessed to be part of the celebration of his all too brief life, and to hear the heart-felt tributes. Certainly everyone there was touched by the unfairness and the tragedy of his death, but also the richness and beauty of his life.
Sincerely...Linda Kearns & Greg Booth

I admire the determination and
The dedication that you have shown
For your family and your country
I know that your wonderful example
Has touched the lives of many people
The example you have set has touched the lives
Of all your fellow soldiers, their families
And the lives of all your family
I know that we all appreciate the wonderful job
That you have done to protect us
And all in our great country to help keep us free
So that we all can enjoy all the freedoms
That this land has to offer us
I just want to say thank you for all your sacrifice

To the Berg Family,
We are so sorry to hear of your loss. We had the privlege of meeting Darren when he came to visit our Sparks unit upon his return from his tour in Afghanistan. We were all touched by the courage & bravery that he demonstrated at such a young age. We continue to receive notes from the parents of our Sparks about the impact that Darren had on them and their children. The girls still look back at the pictures of that day and speak about meeting Darren. On behalf of all our girls and parents,we send our sincere condolences to your family in this difficult time.

To the Berg Family: Some people live many years longer, having never contributed to someone other than themselves. Not your Son Darren. In his short years here he did what the few have done, he gave a year of his life, accepted extreme risk and tried to help some people he had never met that desperately needed his help. That is true courage. My condolences to you all in this time.

Many words describe Darren; comrade, brother, friend, and soldier. The ones that mean the most are missed and never forgotten. It was my privalage to serve with and support your son for the 3 years I spent at the Regiment. The loss of such an outstanding young man with the potential to contribute so much to his community, is heart rending for us all. May you, his family, find peace in the memories and support that all of us have to offer.

Cpl Darren Berg epitimized what Canadian soldiers strive for as individual citizens: to come of age, be challenged to learn and grow, be a great buddy, serve the larger community, and all the while have a great smile.
We Westies will honour him as best we can, embrace both his family and close buddies in their time of need and adjustment, miss him, and continue his legacy along with those who have both served and departed.
Sincerely,
Lieutenant Colonel Doug Poitras

We met Darren several times at the home of his friend, John Avery. Darren was a likeable, fun loving guy whom we worried about when he went to Afghanistan, and felt relief upon hearing of his safe return. We joined him and others at Pat and Al's place when the Olympic Flame went by in 2010. He was so proud to be Canadian!
Our heartfelt condolences to the Berg family and to the Al and Pat Avery family, who were like a second family to Darren.

MANY WORDS (some not suitable here) came into my mind when learning of Darren's passing...The one that has stayed with me over the last few days though, is "PRIDE".
With all the emotions you'll come to feel, let THAT one reign above ALL others.
I know I will....Just for having known Darren and the time we spent together over 5 different seasons of Baseball.(YES..including the one, where you "proudly" told me he was "The MVP"!!)
