Came across Darren when he was in Edmonton; I was on Vancouver Island and did not have cable. Had to listen to him whether I liked it or not :) I learned that I liked him a lot, passionate and enthusiastic for all sports without apologizing. When he moved to TO, I made a point of watching him (had cable by then) and thought the combo with Jenn Hedger was perfect. Same approach to sports without the varnish of other broadcasters. Friend bumped into him at several youth hockey events and said he was the exact same guy on TV...an absolute compliment. You forget at times that people from TV are invited into your living room on a regular basis. I can sincerely say he will be missed from these invites. Sincerest condolences to friends and family. A real loss.

Everything I´ve read or heard about Darren over the years and especially since he passed is that he was born and raised in Porcupine Plains, Saskatchewan. But I quite distinctly remember Darren being in my grade 5 class at Brookwood School in Spruce Grove. And when he first started at ITV in Edmonton I dug up an old class picture from the `76-`77 school year and yes, he was in it, looking the exact same as he did on TV but at 10 years old. I´ve always thought it was pretty cool that I had gone to school for one year with Canada´s favourite sportscaster. I have no idea what ever happened to that class picture over the years but if anybody else from that same class remembers Darren being there I sure would like to know I haven´t been wrong all this time. My condolences to all of Darren´s family and friends.

Our condolences to the Dutchyshen family. Friends for 25 years, we love the memories of our boys growing up playing Hockey together and remaining closest of friends to this day. We remember Darren organizing the dad´s card games at the road trip hockey tournaments. Especially the crazy games of
"In-Between!" Rest in Peace Dutchy, you will be greatly missed.

I have never met Mr. Dutchyshen but I offer my deepest condolences to the family. I felt this loss for some reason.... And I never met him. I lived in Edmonton for the same time period he did.
I first saw him on ITV back in 1987 and he's been a constant in my life for many years.
From ITV Edmonton to Sportsnet the highest in broadcasting in Canada.
He had a personality like no other. The one thing I absolutely admired about him was how dedicated he was towards sports. The topic lit him up like the after effect of fireworks. I deeply admired his passion because I'm still in life trying to figure out mine.
He had a way of writing things that was very amusing in unique way because I will admit that I am not a sports fan and yet he drew me in with the way he would explain things.
I really mean this that no other person on television delivering sports did it like he did. That's what drew me in. Positive enthusiasm even when discussing serious things.
I got to read such nice and kind things about him because I only knew him as a face of sports. I can see why this is an absolute immeasurable loss when a person is kind but so energetic they leave an impression on all of us. That to me is a life well lived.
The soul leaves the body and I do hope everybody who knew him feels his presence. My condolences on your loss.

First met Darren & Candace while coaching their son Brett, for a couple of years with the Aurora Tigers....what an incredible person & family.
Always warm and friendly...he had a great sunny disposition!!
On the road trips, I think the parents had more fun than the players. Great memories!!

We will all miss you Darren. Memories
we have as cousins will never go away. Mostly the Ukrainian Monkey trails in Gilbert Plains. Crawling out upstairs windows at Baba and Gido's then down the tree. And of course, you boys with Gido, coming back from farm, hopping out of vehicle while Gido drove and before You could get back in, Gido sped up leaving you literally in his dust.
Hugs and prayers for auntie Betty, Pam, Kent, Tyler, Brett and Paige"y" as well as your TSN family .
Love from Auntie Diann, Shawn and kids, Jennifer (Jenny) and kids

So sorry for your loss. I had never met Darren but, like so many, I had only known him from watching TSN. His booming voice and excitement while doing replays on Sports Centre gave a certain appreciation he had for sports. A fond memory I have of Darren is from back in the day when WWE wrestling was shown on TSN. He would finish Sports Centre saying something like "stay tuned for wraslin." I always chuckled when I heard him say "WRASLIN'." I couldn't tell if he was saying it like that because he had a disdain for professional wrestling or he was just being his mischievous self. You are already terribly missed.

When it came to sportscasters, Dutchy was unique, I could tell very early he was destined for national stardom. Sports is entertainment and that´s exactly what Dutchy brought to the screen, I´ve never seen or met anyone quite like him.
I had the great pleasure of working with Dutchy at ITV Edmonton back in the 80´s. I was saddened to hear of his passing and offer my condolences to his family and numerous friends.
