Darryl MORRIS Obituary

Published by Vancouver Sun and/or The Province on Oct. 15, 2016.
MORRIS, Darryl Glyn, M.D.
September 19, 1932 - October 5, 2016.
Darryl is survived by his daughters Susan (Peter), Vanessa (Tim), grandchildren David, Daphne, Griffyn, Chloe, Jack and Alexandra, brother David (Cynthia), niece Caitlin, and his wife Angie, from whom he was separated but remained on good terms. His eldest daughter Jennifer died in 2013. Darryl initially obtained an Arts degree at UBC and taught high school English and History in Ontario and London, UK. He then entered UBC medical school, graduating in 1964. He was a family physician in Vancouver and in Port Alice, a challenging isolated solo practice. Darryl was a very skilled, perceptive physician, and loved talking to patients and hearing their stories. He was quite a storyteller himself! He served as chairman of the Workers' Compensation Board review panels and as Medical Director of Pacific Blue Cross. As a young man he was involved in track and field and boxing and later became an enthusiastic squash player. He was a keen steelhead fisherman… He enjoyed growing vegetables and in later years waged a largely unsuccessful battle against deer and bears whilst trying to establish an apple orchard in the country. He loved poetry and music and was a member of the Vancouver Welshmen's choir. Sadly, Darryl developed dementia in recent years, and moved to Columbus Residence. The family would like to thank the staff of Columbus Residence for their compassionate care. There will be a family gathering to share memories of Darryl. He would have been happy to know that anyone wishing to make a charitable donation in his name would direct it to the school in Tanzania that his daughter Susan built with volunteer help (Afretech Aid Society, c/o 5765 Cranley Drive, W. Van, V7W1T1).

I was Darryl's nurse for 2+ years in the 1970s his support to expand my roll was significant and he allowed me to work in an expanded nursing role for many years. Angie and the girls welcomed me into there home and made me feel like family. I have many fond memories of all the Morris' and thNk them for there support. My deepest sympathies to Angie , Susan and Vanessa.

As a patient of Darryl's I was treated to the finest care imaginable. His social skills and stories put him in a class not often seen in the medical world. When he learned that like himself, I was a compassionate angler he took up my offer to visit me at my camp on Barclay Sound where he schooled me in my own back yard and left with a steelhead and a sack full of oysters and clams. Rest in peace fine sir for you were a gentlemen, a sportsman, an outstanding physician and so much more. My condolences to your family and may you rest in peace beside your eldest daughter. I will see you on the other side and please have a rod ready for me
