To My Dearest Father,
Oh that a day shall not go by that I will miss your astounding voice...
Just as your BOLDNESS and confidance caused conflict and insecurity to the weak....
But Father as you told me all my life
...the weak attack the STRONG!!!
There isn't a day that will go by that I will miss what you tought me!!
I will see you on the other side...
Your Daughter,
Nicole Strayhorn

Dear Family and Friends, I just learned of Darryl's passing. What a shock to me. He was always so full of life-- he brought light into my day everytime I saw him. We first met during Jesse Jackson's campaign in 1988 and reconnected again several years ago in the 14th ward Dem. committee. I'm so sorry to hear about this. His presence made a great contribution to our world.

When we first met at Westinghouse Park, Darryl spoke to me as if we had known each other for years. He had that effect or rather that intuition, that yes, we were connected in more ways than one. I told him my mother did live behind the Strayhorns as a child and could hear Billy practicing. The rest of us knew Billy through his music, but Darryl heard Billy but in a different way: with a knowledge that Billy wrote and played music not for fame or glory or money but to give melody / voice to people. Darryl did the same for his constituents. I learned that before voting when meeting him for the first time. I also learned that as a member of the Billy Strayhorn Celebration, an idea that Daryl conceived to honor the musician. Simply stated, he wanted to celebrate a musician, an innovator, a music genius, a family member, an activist in his quiet way. A man who recognizes all of these things and more and honors another man should also be honored / celebrated certainly, in Darryl's case for his responsibility, his leadership, his foresight, humanity, and understanding.
Rest in Peace and Melody Mr. Strayhorn, may we continue hear, sing, and speak to make the world a better place for all as you have done.
Mr. Michael Mariani

Nelson Mandela stated, Your playing small doesn't serve the world. There's nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won't feel insecure around you Darryl never shrank in anyone's presence, he lived his life with confidence. At times, his bold personality caused conflict for some, but if anyone had an opportunity to see Darryl's heart of compassion, they would have experienced the continuation of Mandela's quota, We were born to manifest the glory of God within us. On numerous occasions, I witnessed a glimpse of God's glory demonstrated in the life of Darryl. I am thankful for the privilege in growing together as brothers and will miss Darryl's encouragement and comradery.
To the Family of Darryl Strayhorn, my prayers are with you that God will continue to shine His face upon you and give you peace and comfort.
