I remember you David as a truly sincere being, generous with your time and attention, curious about others, passionate, immensely devoted to your craft, and unapologetically you. I am now just discovering your passing. I'm remembering the twinkle in your eyes, the sweet smile, your mischievous laughter, and big loving hugs you gave. I also remember your childlike ways; throwing food at me while out to dinner with the cast. Shevonne, what a gift you are to David, to the world. I remember such fun, crazy times with you. Do you remember David having us recite our lines in the bathtub together (may I add, fully clothed) to gain a different perspective about the scene and to free us up? Genius. I learned so much about acting from you both. It was so special for us all to be together to see David's play, 900 Oneonta, in New York City when it opened. You and David have always held a special place in my heart. Transformative times...where spirit and magic collide. My life went another direction and I moved back to the desert, but all these years later and now on the East Coast, I have never forgotten our friendship and the impact that David had on me. I have always relished in and have been proud to call myself, amongst many, a student of David's...in many ways...and if only for a short time. Lovingly, Debbie

Creativity and honesty in work and deed. Loved David and without a doubt one of the true creative souls that I've been inspired by. I learned from David at the Whitefire theater and on several projects. He created characters rich in spirit, many who were "seekers", searching for enlightenment through love. That is what I feel when I think of him. Continually seeking and loving. Thank you David.
love,

I am Dana Ware Hornby. David was introduced to me by my father, Paul D. Ware, MD, who was a mentor to David and David became an adopted son to our family. He babysat for me and took me on many adventures. He was one of the most extraordinary gifts and lights in my my life. I named my first-born son after him. There are too many words in my heart and soul to share. I only learned today, Christmas 2021, that he had passed. What a profound loss to the world. Despite having no contact with him in decades, my heart remembers the profound love, and affection that I have~he is part of the very fabric of my being.

I am sorry to see David has passed. I knew David from Shreveport circa 1962ish. I was a little kid he saved from getting beat up by older kids. I used to watch the older kids ages 7-10 play baseball. Sometimes they would pick on me. David was so tall and older, he would come save me - his house was on the other side of the school yard from ours. We struck up a special friendship. He was very kind and mature and decent even to a 6 yo. Well life went on and I had not thought about him until one evening in 2009 shortly after my mother died. It was the early morning (maybe 0200) in Houston TX and I was contemplating death and dying , grieving for my recent loss when his movie "The Civilization of Maxwell Bright" came on the tele. I was sure it was a gift from God only to be confirmed when I saw it was directed by a David Beaird. After Googling I realized it was my friend and affirmed yet again God had sent him to save me, this time from the fear of death and dying. Even as I sit writing this I find myself crying in gratitude for his contribution to my own peace and a sadness for his passing before I could properly thank him. So, I thank you his family and friends that "his bread, cast upon the water many years ago" and more recently in his writing and movies has yielded tremendous love and appreciation from a fan both then and now. Keanu Reeves said recently when asked what we know about death, he answered, "The one thing we know for sure is the people who love you will miss you." I would like to be numbered among those who can say, "I will miss David, he was a good egg." Nick deBerardinis

I was so fortunate to meet David and be a part of his film project "The Civilization of Maxwell Bright". He was kind, thoughtful, spiritually grounded, creative, and gone too soon. My sympathies to those who were closest to him.

Even before Wisdom Bridge, David had established himself as an actor to watch, a PERSON to watch, and he made the trip up those steep stairs on Howard Street, above the old violin shop, a pilgrimage destination in Chicago. His Wisdom Bridge successor, Robert Falls, did wonderful things there . . . but the theatre's reputation and credo already had been established by David, and a huge part of that reputation/credo was that Wisdom Bridge was a place where daring young theatre artists could be ambitious.

David really started my acting career in Chicago. I was lucky enough to be one of the original members of The Wisdom Theatre company. Through David's direction, I had the chance to play many classic roles but always with a twist. I will never forget being one of a trio of women who played Roxanne in his brilliant production of Cyrano. It was a wonderful beginning as a young actor to have the chance to work on exciting innovative theatre. I lost touch with David after he moved west but he always popped up in my thoughts now and then. So sorry to hear we lost him.

David founded Chicago's Wisdom Bridge Theater in the early Seventies and brought the quality of theater to a higher level because just as he as a person was gifted his gifts translated to that stage on Howard Street. He was young and abundant of visionary ideas. He charmed so many people--actors, audiences, the press. I liked him alot and was sorry he left Chicago so long ago.

Though I was only in your class for a fleeting moment. Your words of wisdom were truly inspirational. You identified the strong directorial ability I had which I use daily as and Executive Producer. Thank you. You will never be forgotten David. Our hearts are broken.

Oh, David, there are no words to express how much you changed my perspective of my view of the world. Clear intention, approach the same objective in different ways, find the interesting, and the courage to make big choices. These are things I think about even today in my daily life. Always a comforting smile, love and care in your eyes when sharing a discussion, and that wonderful snort-laugh that you would emit when you couldnt contain the outburst of laughter. I am better because of you. You, David, made me believe what I dared not and I will be forever grateful and thankful you brightened my life. I love you for being you and I will miss you with fond memories. Rest well, my friend.

You changed my life, taught so many of us the difference between fame and artistry, and set the bar for living and loving so high that for the rest of my life I will look up to you and see only endless sky. The world is sweeter and kinder because of you. See you again my friend, and until then I will smile when I think of you. Endless gratitude for the life that was, and is, you. Shari

I can't get that Joni Mitchell lyric out of my head
"Don't it always seem to go
That you don't know what you've got 'til it's gone"
45 years my dear, dear friend. Pretty good run for a couple of theatre geeks like us.
Love you
Leland

I love the Bear - always have and always will. His humor, generosity, and grace will live on. His powerful legacy as an artist is matched only by his extraordinarily huge heart - I can still hear it beating.
