David Berger Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Apr. 17, 2025.
David R. (Doc) Berger, 79, of Washington, WV passed away peacefully April 16, 2025 after an 8-year battle with Frontotemporal Dementia. He was born on August 20, 1945 in Tennessee to the late Ed and Johnnie Berger. Dave was a member of Lubeck Church of Christ.

After graduating from Magnolia High School in 1964 Dave served the U.S. Army in Vietnam. He was a proud member of the 11th Armored Calvary Regiment D Company, serving the Black Horse as a medic. Dave graduated from Glenville College in 1973 with a degree in Business and Speech. He retired from Johns Manville in Vienna and spent several years working as a security officer at the federal building in Parkersburg.

Once officially retired, Dave was able to focus on his love of being outdoors, gardening and working on his tractors. The only thing he loved more than riding the tractor himself was taking one of his grandchildren along with him for a ride. In addition, Dave was an avid writer sharing his stories of his time in Vietnam in several magazines as well as articles about tractors from his personal experiences. Dave always looked forward to his reunions with his Black Horse family.

Surviving Dave was the love of his life, wife of 23 years, Martha Ice Berger. Dave is also survived by four daughters, Denise (Aaron) Arthaud of Knoxville, TN, Marcella (Rob) Saunders of Fairmont, Mary (Joe) DePergola of Parkersburg, and Centha Diveley of Vienna. Grandchildren: Hunter Arthaud, Kaytlin (Josh) Jones, Madison Arthaud, Hanah (Murad) DeLuca, Garrett DePergola, Connor Saunders, Taci Saunders, Brady Saunders, Daniel Brewer, Paul (Kayleigh) Cooper, Cara Diveley and Clayton Diveley. Great-Grandchildren: James, Blaire, Nova, and Hayden, and cherished 4-legged companion "Poppy".

Additionally, Dave is survived by his loving sister Mary (Chuck) Clegg of New Martinsville, nephew Jeremiah (Jennifer) Clegg of Albemarle, and his Blackhorse brothers across the country.

Visitation Friday 2-4 pm and 6-8pm, Saturday 10-12 with service to follow at the Lubeck Church of Christ. Online condolences may be sent to www.leavittfuneralhome.com.
