David Blitz Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jan. 16, 2013.
BRANFORD, Conn. - David Shawn Blitz passed away Saturday, Jan. 12, 2013, after a courageous fight with cancer. David was born Nov. 13, 1960, in Queens, N.Y., the son of Sandy and Meri (Urano) Blitz.

Dave lived his life to the fullest. Dave read several newspapers each day, along with many magazines. He was an avid sports fan. As a young boy, when he came home from school every day, he would read the sports section to look at the boxscore of his beloved Mets. He had a book wherein he would write and calculate the averages of each player for the Mets every day. He did this until after he was married and until the newspapers did the calculating for him. He enjoyed his music too, especially the Rolling Stones. Dave earned his bachelor's degree from Southern Connecticut University and his master's in finance from the University of New Haven. This scholarly training held Dave in good stead. After a 25-year career in banking, he earned the love and respect of his banking colleagues, clients and public officials throughout the state of Connecticut. He culminated his career as the executive vice president, director of commercial banking in Farmington, Conn. David held many board positions in the community. Among them the board of directors of the Greater New Haven Chamber of Commerce and the executive committee of the Soundview Family YMCA. Dave has received numerous awards and honors, including the Banknorth Sales Performance in 2003, 2004 and 2005; the U.S. Small Business Administration Eagle District Director Award, 2012; Charitable Leadership Award, 2006; and MS Corporate Achiever Award, 2004 and 2005.

David was predeceased by his mother, Meri Urano Blitz. In addition to his wife, Lita, and his daughters, Merissa and Jessica, David is survived by his father, Sandy and his wife, Mona; his brother, Michael and spouse, Deborah; sister, Darcy and spouse, Jeff; and brother, Jeffrey and wife, Zulma. He is also survived by his mother-in-law, Phyllis Orlando; several brothers-in-law; uncle, Al and aunt, Olga, of Texas; aunt, Beverly and uncle, Ernie, of Florida; as well as many nieces, nephews and cousins. The family thanks and acknowledges Smilow Cancer Center at Yale-New Haven Hospital, Connecticut Hospice and Farmington Bank for all of their love and support throughout this trying time.

A memorial service will be held 5:30 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 17, at Congregation Beth El, 183 French St., Bangor, with a sharing of sustainance afterward. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made on behalf of his daughters to the Dave Blitz Scholarship Fund, care of Farmington Bank, 32 Main St., Farmington, CT 06032.

I was happy knowing your were living your life with joy and content
loving your wife
watching your kids grow
petting your cat
living your life
enjoying your career
knowing you were surrounded by familiar places - coming home to smiling faces
taking simple pleasures in dining and drinking
relaxing with family on a Saturday evening
seeing a game, or a movie with friends
playing golf with a boasting story
planting a hydrangea and some hosta too
so sad knowing you are gone from all these things
that made you happy
just living your life

Lita, Merissa and Jessica,
When I first learned of Dave's illness, I witnessed his extrodinary courage and so named him "Superman". Upon his return, his office was decorated with the Superman logo. He quickly discovered it was me and told me how much he appreciated the logo, never figuring himself to be so strong.
I sent emails to Superman while he was out, to keep him up-to-date with the "unofficial news" of our office and continued to be amazed when he said I made his day when in fact, he made mine.
When Dave first joined us, I had the opportunity to speak with him often, as our offices were across from each other. He talked about all of you frequently - clearly his family meant everything to him.
