David Darrow Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Feb. 29, 2024.
David Theron Darrow, 79, of Pinellas Park, FL, passed away on February 25, 2024. He was born on November 8, 1944, in Chelsea, MA. David was a beloved husband, father, brother, and friend.

David was a pharmacist for 43 years, dedicating his career to serving others in retail, nursing home pharmacies, and hospitals. He notably served as the Director of Pharmacy at La Grange Memorial Hospital. In his retirement, he pursued his passion by working at Sunshine Ace Hardware stores in Naples and Largo, FL, where he enjoyed assisting customers and being part of a supportive team.

A kind and fun-loving person, David had a zest for life. He enjoyed traveling, cooking, golfing, and camping. For 7 years, he and his wife, Susan, lived full time in a motorhome, exploring the beauty of the US and Canada and spending winters in Naples, FL.

David was a faithful member of various Episcopal Churches, including St. Helena's in Burr Ridge, IL, Grace Church in Oak Park, IL, St. Mark's in Marco Island, FL, and The Cathedral Church of St. Peter in St. Petersburg, FL.

He is survived by his wife Susan, son Mark, son and daughter-in-law Andrew and Anne Mae, brother and sister-in-law Greg and Crystal, as well as many cherished in-laws, nephews and nieces in the Darrow, Madden and Carey clans. He was preceded in death by his parents, Merritt and Marjorie, and his brother Paul.

In lieu of flowers, donations in David's memory can be made to The Cathedral Church of St. Peter, 140 Fourth St. N, St. Petersburg, FL 33701. A funeral service will be celebrated at the Cathedral on Saturday, March 9th at 12:00 pm. His ashes will be interred in the Cathedral Memorial Garden. A luncheon to celebrate his life will be held in Harvard Hall after the service.

Since the service is being held during Grand Prix weekend in St. Petersburg, we suggest that those planning to attend give themselves a little extra travel time. Anyone who might be coming from out of town may need to stay in Largo, Clearwater or Bradenton, as everything is booked in the St. Petersburg area.

David will be deeply missed by all who knew him. May he rest in peace.

John and I have so many memories of David and Susan through the years at St. Mark's. David was active in so many ways and always willing to help when the men of the church were assigned to activities. I particularly enjoyed his attachment to the dogs they owned! We admired his career change, from pharmacist to hardware "specialist!" But one little thing will always remind me of David - whenever we grill a pork loin! He was a good cook with special dishes, but we'll always think of him when we count "7,6,5" in timing the pork on the grill! We will never forget this kind sweet man.

I knew David as a member of The Cathedral Church of St. Peter. He always had a lovely spirit about him. He will certainly be missed and I pray for Susan and her family that they are assured his life was a very fulfilled life.

I first met David at Ferris State University where we were both RA'S at North Bond Hall. I also took my first trip to Chicago with him and stayed at his parents home. We became fast friends during those college years and remained friends for almost 60 years. He was fun to be with and very competitive as we played a Marathon game of Stocks and Bonds for over 6 months. I introduced David to Country ham and Grits when he came South to be in my wedding. I will miss him terribly because he was one of my best buddies.
