Wow is all I can say I had no idea. What a wonderful pediatrician!!He was my daughter ped. until he retired. He was a awesome person. He helped us find answers to issues of my daughter no one else could. He took time to explain and made sure I understood. It was a shock to hear of his passing today at MCv Stony Point. To His Family: I'm so sorry for your loss. He was a great man. I feel truly bless to have had him touch my life.

Dr. Draper was my pediatrician when I was younger. I used to get sick almost every month and no one was able to tell my mom why, until she met Dr. Draper. He was able to figure out what was wrong and spent many a night coming to the hospital to check on me when I did get sick. I am SO incredibly thankful that there are doctors out there with the dedication and compassion that Dr. Draper had for his patients. I still remember visiting Pinocchio during my office visits to collect my lollipop :) Coincidentally I am now in medical school myself and over this past Christmas break I was just speaking to my mom and Dr. Draper's name came up. She said that if we could get in touch with him we should let him know where I was now and that he would be proud to know that I was going into medicine too. Just last week I received an email from Dr. Bonnie Buxton, one of my microbiology/immunology professors in school sharing the memory of her uncle who was a doctor that was involved in helping patients with CF and had passed away recently. I was shocked to see that it was Dr. Draper... I'm in school in Georgia and even here the news of his passing reached me. I shared some of my personal memories of Dr. Draper with her. I would like to say to the family of such an AMAZING man and physician that I'm so sorry for your loss. Dr. Draper touched so many lives with his work. He was compassionate and dedicated to his profession and I can only hope to model myself after such a wonderful physician. Know that he will never be forgotten and that his memory will live on, not only with you as his family, but also in the hearts of every child and patient that he helped during his time on this Earth.

DAD - Danke schön (as we have all heard Dr. Draper say) for such great memories! I had the pleasure of working for Dr. Draper for many years at Stony Point Pediatrics where I saw first hand how much he loved each and every one of "his kids" including my first daughter Savannah, at her one week appointment he said “well she is beautiful, healthy and doing well but she will never be a basketball player”. He was a smart man and cared for everyone especially his wife, kids and grandkids which I also had the pleasure of getting to know a little. Dr. Draper you have touched more lives than you probably ever realized and we all appreciate the way your kindness just came natural. Love, Wanda, Ray, Savannah & Timmy West

Mrs. Draper and family -we are so sorry to hear of your loss. Our daughter has CF and Dr.Draper welcomed us into his "CF family" For 28 years he. was a father, brother and friend to our family and our daughter's hero. She had a double lung transplant in 2005 and as happens in life, we lost our contact with most of our MCV family including Dr. Draper, but he has always been in our hearts. We know that his great care both personally and medically helped us get thru some very tough times. I will not forget our walks to the elevators, while he shared a hug and a mint and helped to calm my fears. We will forever be in his debt and will hold the memory of this special man always. - Fred & Cookie Whittaker - Bowling Green, VA.

Dr. Draper was the absolute best doctor I have ever met. He loved children and they loved him. He took "time" with each child and the Moms and Dads. It's no fluke that his initials spell DAD! Rest well Dr. DAD. We'll miss you; and Pinocchio.

January 18, 2011

Dr. Draper was the one who called me that ill fated day on July 29, 1992 to tell me that my daughter had CF. Over the years as my daughter's peditrician and also the director of the CF clinic, he helped our family come to terms with this disease. I will always remember him picking up my daughter at 3 or 4 yrs old and dancing with her at another patient's wedding. He was the sweetest, loving, and most compassionate man when it came to "his kids" as he called them. The medical world lost a true soldier in the fight to cure CF. Thank you for everything!

Dr. Draper was loved by my (now 26 & 22) year old daughters, Logan and Alex Muzik. Logan and I were just talking about him a couple days ago while going through a box of her childhood stuff. In it is a sticker from Dr. Draper that says "I love my pediatrician"which brought back fond memories of him and Pinnocchio. I'm sure she'll treasure the sticker (since the lollipops were all eaten). The treats were great, but Dr. Draper will mostly be remembered for being so good with children. I don't know of any other doctor who would take calls at home - a new mother's best friend.

Betty, Cathy, Randy and family

As a young kid, I spent alot of time with your family, as Randy and I were close(best)friends. Quite often Dr. Draper would be called and immediately leave home. I knew he was a pediatrician, but didn't understand much about being on call. Later in life I attended VCU/MCV and worked at MCV for a short time. It wasn't until then that I learned what a well respected and great physician he was. Every one in every department knew who Dr. Draper was-one fine compassionate physician, diffierent from most-one of a kind. I know he will be missed by his family, friends and paients.

With deepest sympathy,

Words cannot begin to express what a brilliant man Dr. Draper was. It was because of him that I am here today. His love, dedication, and passion for his fight against CF was just as strong as anyone who was diagnosed or any family who had a child with CF. He touched more lives than I'm sure anyone could ever know. Thank you for the long hours, taking calls at home in the middle of the night, all the birthday parties (all 18 that I had), Graduation, and other family functions you were at. Thank you for every dream you made come true. You made a heck of a mark on the world, left such a legacy. I have made it 24+ years and I will continue to fight in your name! May you rest in peace Dr. DAD. I love and miss you with all my heart!

Dr Draper meant so much to my family. He not only carried my children through their battle with cystic fibrosis but carried their coffins at their funerals. I'' never forget him driving from richmond to our home in powhatan to attend our 7 year olds birthday party. He explained to her that she would be going to heaven soon to be wtih her sister and Jesus and asked her if she wanted to go on her journey at home or in the hospital. When she said the hospital, he carried her to his car and drove us an hour away to MCV hospital where she died the next day. I can never remember my childrens lives without having memories of you laced in their as we fought our battle with CF. God Bless you Dr Draper for a life well lived and for serving others. To the Draper Family,

This bit of news touched my heart deeply. Thanks to his dedication to the medical field I am alive to talk about my memories of such a great physician. I am currently 35 and I knew Dr. Draper most of my life, 13 years to be exact, going to the CF clinic on Wednesday's. I can talk for most of his patients that he loved what he did and he cared for us like we were his own children. I can remember when he sat me down and asked me if I would consider getting a lung transplant and my jaw dropped. At the time, 17 years old, he always said I would out live him. That was a big promise for a CF patient back in the 90's. Well, like every other time he would tell me something I would believe him, and I agreed to a transplant. Here, 16 years post double lung transplant and one of the longest survivors, I write to his family expressing my sorrow. I owe my life to Dr. Draper and am deeply sadden by the news but know that he lived a great life helping others out. Wish I was there to say goodbye.

Mrs. Draper and family,
Our thoughts and prayers are with you and all the family during these difficult days. Dr. Draper was our Pediatrician (1976 on) and truly family to us after moving here from out of state. I will never forget his kindness and your words of comfort on the many times I called after hours. I can still here you say..."he's not here but I'll track him down for you". Within maybe 30 minutes he was on the phone. I have been praying for him continually over the years and know God must have given him a place of great honor in Heaven.
Sincerely, Peg Magin, and Don. ALso, Kathie,Karen,Colleen, John and Tim

Dr. Draper. Words cannot express the sadness I am feeling because you were my first pediatrician and the best at that. You got me interested in medicine and because of this interest I am going into that field. I can remember telling me and my family that I was going to grow up to be tall and skinny with a big adams apple. Well I am glad to say you were right. Also the one quote that I will cherish you saying forever is that "girls are trouble, ok". I will miss you and the world will miss you. A great man, great person, and great doctor.
