David Fischer Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Nov. 14 to Nov. 19, 2022.
David A. Fischer, 73, passed away at his home in Oak Grove, MN as he was surrounded by family on November 2, 2022. He was the first son born on July 14, 1949 to Fred and Viola Fischer of Clara City, MN.

David graduated high school in his home town of Clara City before joining the U.S. Navy where he served 6 years and received Sailor of the Year honors for the USS Ogden Command. David became trained as an electrician in the Navy, a skill that served him well in his 34 years at Burlington Northern Sante Fe (BNSF) railroad where he retired in 2009. During his time in the Navy, David met his loving wife of 51 years, Kathy Fischer (Bruce) and had three children, Kari (Graydon) Fowler, Dawn Fischer, and Jason (Amanda) Fischer. David and Kathy raised their family in Barstow, CA where they lived over 40 years before moving to Minnesota in 2019, to join the rest of the family.

David's greatest joy was being with family and adventuring outdoors, a love that he passed along to his kids, grandkids, Cody (Kayla) Fowler, Austin Fowler, and Shaylyn Fowler, and his great grandson, Luke Fowler. He enjoyed telling fish stories from his various deep sea fishing adventures or from his annual lake vacations with his parents, brother, sister, and their families. Everyone loved sitting around the cabin table eating bars, drinking coffee, and listening to stories of their shenanigans from years past. His laugh could fill the room. One of his favorite adventures was going to the boundary waters canoe area with his family, where he showcased his various outdoor skills including hanging the food bag using rope and a couple twigs, a skill that is still a challenge to his kids and grandkids.

David was a man of faith and mentored many men in his years, some who David considered his extended family. His enduring faith, even through sickness, was a testament to his deeply held belief in God and His Word.

David was preceeded in death by his parents. He is survived by brother Jim Fischer and sister Cindy Fischer.

An open house to honor and celebrate David's life will be held on December 7th, 2022 from 12:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. at North Oaks West Recreation Center, 14 West Pleasant Lake Road, North Oaks, MN. Flowers are welcome and can be sent to Dawn Fischer at 18 East Oaks Road, North Oaks, MN 55127. As an option to flowers, the family requests spending some quality time outdoors with your loved ones in his memory.

His earthly body may have failed but his spirit lives on in heaven.

Whatever my lot, Thou has taught me to say, it is well, it is well with my soul.

Didn´t know my friend, my brother had passed. I think of David a lot. Saw David Hawk on Tuesday, 18 of July and asked him had he heard anything from David and he told me of this news. Kathy, I know it´s late but not too late for me to say: with deepest sympathy from my heart. To God is his Glory. Amen

David was celebrating his retirement and Kathy was throwing him a big surprise party. We were to meet at the golf course at the Marine base.
We were in our RV and as we approached Barstow, the outside temperature read 117!!!
We really wondered "Just how much do we love this guy?!"
Our thoughts and prayers are with you Kathy and all the family. We love you!!

I first met David in May, 1969, when I reported aboard the USS Ogden, home ported in San Diego, CA. He was a long way from home and I was only 3 hours, so I invited him to come home with me for the weekend. Also, my mom was from MN so I thought there would be a connection.
I was driving a 1963 Dodge Polara. It started losing power so we stopped at a truck stop to find a mechanic. Of course it was late Friday night, so no luck. I started to work on it myself; it seemed like a head gasket blew, so I removed the heads. Poor David! He thought we would be stuck there all weekend! But I called my dad; he came and towed us home with a strap! I drove my dad´s 1966 Datsun pickup to get us back to the ship Monday morning. What a way to start a 53 year friendship!
It was those weekend trips, becoming a part of my family and going to church with us, that David met Kathy...and the rest is history!
Good bye my friend--I will see you again when I report to my new duty station in heaven.

Dave was a good electrician and a good instructor at Santa Fe railroad. He was smart and pleasure to work with. He will be missed. He also lived down the street from me for many years. I always remember his Volkswagen bug parked in the driveway

I´m sorry to hear of David leaving this world, but I know he´s at peace with Jesus. He´s one of the guys I most missed when I left Santa Fe in Barstow. Prayers for Kathy and the family.

Dave was highly respected and filled the room with his smile. Loved watching all the guys play softball on the PCG church team back in the day. When most people gave up and left the church Dave and Kathy stayed faithful. Love this family, every one of them. May God give you comfort in the memories you share. Wish we could be there to celebrate his life with you all and give you each a big hug.

Much love,
Randy & Debbie
