David Fleetwood Obituary

Published by Cowichan Valley Citizen from Jul. 16 to Jul. 18, 2014.
David Cameron Fleetwood January 23, 1929 - July 11, 2014 David passed away suddenly and peacefully on July 11, 2014 at Cairnsmore Place. He was born in Duncan on January 23, 1929. He grew up and spent most of his 85 years in the Cowichan Valley. He worked in the logging industry doing most jobs but mostly as a cat operator. He loved machines and fast cars. He was a very social person, enjoying, in later years coffee out, playing Trivial Pursuit at Cairnsmore and their social events with music and food. Music was a huge part of his life. He could pick out a tune, by ear, on almost any instrument. As a teenager he sang in the choir at St. Andrews Church, Cowichan Station. He was best known for his piano accordion playing. He performed at school concerts as a young boy, family occasions, parties and just for his own relaxation. Our thanks to his late Uncle Doug for providing him with his first accordion. David had great fondness for cats and dogs, especially Samoyed and other large breeds. He liked to go camping and panning for gold. Like so many, with the dream of striking it rich he never found any but enjoyed the search. David was predeceased by his parents, Jack and Mabel Fleetwood. He is survived by his very devoted wife Gail, his sister Marie Skertchly and by his children, Darleen Kendrew (Graham), Larry (Jeannette), Heather Getschel (Bruce), Lloyd, Cheryl and Andrea Zudot (Keri), many grandchildren, great grandchildren and even great great grandchildren. The family wishes to thank all the staff at Cairnsmore Place for their kindness and care. Thanks to the many volunteers who came to provide music and entertainment while David was a resident there. He did enjoy it. Cremation has taken place by his request. No flowers please.
