David Gahm Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Sep. 26 to Sep. 27, 2008.
Eagle River resident David John Gahm, 51, died Sept 21, 2008, of natural causes during a canoe camping trip on the Kenai Peninsula.
A memorial gathering of family and friends will be held Saturday at Community Covenant Church in Eagle River. Visitation will be from 2 to 3 p.m., followed by a celebration of his life from 3 to 5 p.m. All are invited to join his family at their home following the celebration.
Dave was born July 27, 1957, in Laurens, Iowa. Following a tour of duty in the U.S. Air Force, he moved to Alaska in 1979 to join RCA Inc. as a radio naval technician at Clear Air Force Base.
In 1981, he joined ARCO Alaska Inc. as a telecom technician, based on the North Slope. ARCO later assigned him to Anchorage as a telecom engineer, a position he held until 2001.
That year, he joined Alaska USA Federal Credit Union as a network systems engineer in Anchorage, and until the time of his death, was senior network systems engineer. In this position, he was responsible for the reliability of voice and data communication networks across the credit union's vast statewide system, which includes some sites in Washington state.
Dave held several network engineering certifications, among them the Cisco Certified Internetwork Expert (CCIE), the highest network engineering rating.
"Dave's network engineering analysis and design have had a major impact on the stability and performance of the Credit Union's wide area network," wrote an Alaska USA Federal Credit Union senior manager. "His improvements enabled the expansion of the network to support new branch and office locations, supported the dramatic growth in member utilization of our electronic delivery channels, and resulted in unprecedented stability, reliability and performance of our entire network. Dave did an outstanding job in mentoring and training junior staff members, resulting in dramatically improved productivity of the entire department. He was a valued and respected member of our team."
"An avid outdoorsman," his family wrote, "Dave was a skilled hunter, both with bow and arrow and rifle, a veteran fisherman, and a skilled hiker, mountaineer, telemark skier, river rafter and canoeist. Dave shared his love for the outdoors with his family. Many great family times were spent floating down the rivers of Alaska or hiking in Alaska's backcountry. His love for the great outdoors did not end with just his family. He was always up for sharing his passion for the outdoors with anyone who was up for the challenge. Alaska was his backyard. Dave shared his love for hunting with his son, Jason. When his son Clinton earned Eagle Scout rank, Dave overflowed with pride. He took great pleasure in having his daughter, Abby, along as they earned their turns free-heeling in the knar-knar. Dave had a wonderful gift for enjoying life that we all will remember with fond admiration and try to replicate in our own lives.
"As a committed husband and loving father, Dave took pride in all aspects of family. He would beam as he watched his children participate in sporting events and school activities. He was always proud of his wife, Lee, as she helped further and improve the activities that make a family succeed. Dave welcomed all friends into his home, and was known as the neighborhood dog walker."
Dave is survived by his wife Leila "Lee" of Eagle River; two sons, Jason and family of Newkirk, Okla., and Clinton of Eagle River; his daughter, Abigail of Eagle River; two grandchildren, Damien and Alexandria; parents, Darline and John Gahm of Weiser, Idaho; two sisters, Cindy of Colorado and Debra Woods and her spouse, Terry, of Texas; and three brothers, Steve Gahm and family of Idaho; Michael Gahm of Georgia, and Doug Gahm and family of Arizona.
His family wrote: "Dave was a generous, loving and committed husband and family man who was dedicated to his work, his children and his outdoor life."
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to a memorial fund at Alaska USA Federal Credit Union, account No. 1417369.

I had the great fortune of meeting and working with Mr. Gahm on a project for a Collaboration project we were working together on. I had just happened to bring my son along with me so he could see Alaska. Mr. Gahm invited us to take a quick trip along the Kenai. The result was my son and I having an experience neither of us will ever forget. My son and I are truly lucky to have met Mr. Gahm and will always have a space for him in our heart.

I was lucky enough to have met David and was even luckier to have spent time with him on the Kenai. I met David as part of a professional visit and during that visit he offered to take me on the Kenai for a weekend trip. That weekend with David is one of the greatest experiences I will ever have. He took myself and my son on a trip that will be forever a part of both our memories.

I am truly blessed to have had David cross my life.

Hi,
I didn't get to know Dave as much as I really wanted to. The little I know of Dave was from a project between Alaska USA and Polycom (where I worked). The last time I saw Dave was December 2007 and we both chatted about arranging a backpacking trip. We never finished making plans... events like this remind me that life is not something to be taken for granted and that truly all of us should be thankful for everyday that we wake up and are here.

I had the privilege to work with David both at ARCO and AKUSA, while I was employed at ATU/ACS. An outstanding Network/Telecom Engineer as well as a very nice guy. Sorry to lose such a talented person.

Dear Clinton John,
Sometimes lifes challenges are questioned, why? May you keep God first in your life as you put one foot in front of the other to accept God's plan. It will take time to heal, time to learn to live without your dad's physical presence, and time to become at peace. As a mother, I wish I could heal your heart. Your dad will live on in your heart and will always be with you in spirit. Know that your dad truly loved you and was very proud of you. I am here. How very proud I am of you. I love you. Mom

I had the privilege of working with Dave during the past few years. I remember one day he called just to say that I was doing a good job and he appreciated me. I will never forget that call. Dave was always kind and patient and he had a sincere kindness that made him shine.

To his family, and his Alaska USA family, my thoughts and prayers are with you. God Bless

I never met Dave in person but I knew him for years through our online community of telemark and backcountry skiers. I always enjoyed reading his thoughtful posts, in which his love of the sport was obvious, though clearly surpassed by his love of family and the pride he had in his kids, especially on our board for Abby and her freeheel skiing skills.

On behalf of our community of many thousands, I offer our sincere condolences to Dave's wife and children for their loss. He will be missed by many.

I met Dave through skiing. It didn't take me long to realize how much he loved his wife and his kids and what a gift they were. What an incredible individual. Thank you for our time together Dave and God bless your family. You and your family will be in our prayers.

Please accept my sincere condolences for the tragic and untimely loss of Dave. As a valued coworker, Dave was instrumental in the continuous improvement attained by the Alaska USA Federal Credit Union data/phone network over the last 7 years. Dave's expansive wealth of knowledge was tapped by many of his coworkers which in turn helped all of us grow professionally. Dave was very focused on finding the best ways to solve our challenges and often brought his unique brand of humor to most any situation. Dave will surely be missed.
