David Greeneisen Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jun. 11, 2025.
David P. Greeneisen, 84, of Bingham Farms, Michigan passed away on Saturday, June 7th, 2025, with his wife and children by his side.

Born June 6th, 1941, David was the middle son of five siblings to Frank and Mildred Greeneisen in Ft. Bragg, North Carolina and raised in Marysville, Ohio.

David graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and St. John's University, acquiring four engineering degrees.

As a U.S. Navy Captain, he served 35 years, 10 years of which were active duty during the Vietnam War era.

David began his civilian career in the automotive industry at Kelsey-Hayes Co/Fruehauf, moving on to Sheller-Globe, Masland, Standard Products, and HP Pelzer. He held executive positions in engineering, research, operations, and strategy. David retired in 2006 and continued as an auto consultant for three years.

He enjoyed mentoring, sponsoring, and cheerleading the next generation of his family and community members. He led and sponsored Detroit high school students at the University Preparatory Academy Robotics Program. He was a dedicated "Soccer Team Grandad" in Austin, TX with his grandson Jarrett and tutored his granddaughter Lucy in high school statistics, which she then studied at University of Michigan. He and his grandson Carter built a computer and joyously celebrated his tennis wins along with granddaughter Claire's equestrian triumphs.

His dream was to tour St. Petersburg, Russia and see the Bolshoi Ballet Company perform (which he saw in Detroit many years ago) prompting him to hone his Russian language skills and converse with anyone who spoke the language. He also spoke Spanish and studied French, German, and Japanese.

David had a warm and compassionate demeanor with many interests and a quick wit. He was a consummate gentleman, home chef, knowledge seeker, inventor, philanthropist, was proud of his military service, and loved his country and family. David's light will live on in the hearts of all who knew him.

He is survived by his wife, Christy, brothers Jon and Tom (Cathy) Greeneisen, son Geof (Susan), daughter Kirsten, daughter Thea (Ricardo), and his grandchildren Claire & Carter Greeneisen, and Jarrett & Lucy Wood. Preceded in death by his parents Frank and Mildred Greeneisen; brother Kermit (Ann) Greeneisen; sister Susie (Paul) Dayton; and sister-in-law Marylin Greeneisen.

Donations can be made to the University Preparatory Academy's robotics program in his name. Visit

My thoughts are with you Christy and the entire Greeneisen family. I was very lucky to worked with David on many project advisory boards while I was at the University of Michigan Office for the Study of Automotive Transportation. He was always keen to share his experiences and perspectives and more importantly introduce us to his extensive network of automotive contacts who could help us just that much more.

He built that network more as friends than colleagues in the same way he helped us, by listening, giving time, and ribbing you with sarcasm to share a joint laugh....I believe I took a lot away from those experiences and, like a lot of people, am better off with those memories in my mind and heart.
