David Griggs Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Jan. 21 to Jan. 22, 2021.
David Griggs

Powell - David E. Griggs, 68, of Powell, TN went to his heavenly home on 1/18/21 after a relatively short battle with cancer. He was at home with his wife by his side. David was preceded in death by his parents, Olin Dan and Elizabeth Griggs. He is survived by his loving wife of almost 42 years, Cheryl Griggs; brother, Lloyd Griggs; nephew, Scott Griggs (Susan) and two special grandnephews, Jeremiah and Jacob Griggs.

David was born and raised in San Antonio, Texas. As a child David loved spending time outdoors and at the lake with family and friends. After graduating high school David attended Southwest Texas State University and graduated with a B.S. in Biology, minoring in Chemistry. David then completed the Medical Technologist Internship Program at Baptist Memorial Hospital in San Antonio. After receiving his ASCP Certification, he moved to Corpus Christi, Texas and worked as a Medical Technologist at Spohn Hospital where he met his lifelong soul mate who would later become his wife. They soon moved to Florida together and were married in Sarasota. They settled in the Florida Keys where David worked as a Customer Instructor for Coulter Electronics, a company that designed and manufactured blood testing and other equipment. When the Coulter Education Center relocated to Miami Lakes, they moved to Davie, Florida where David attended Nova Southeastern University in the evenings and earned a B.S. in Electrical Engineering. He continued to work at Coulter Electronics, but as a Software Testing Engineer and later as a Senior Software Verification and Validation Engineer. In 1997 David and his wife moved to Knoxville, TN, an area that they had grown fond of over the years. It was there he found his dream of living on some acreage in the beautiful hills of Tennessee. David worked at SAIC in Oakridge as a Test Engineer for various companies across the US; later he worked at Scripps Networks (Discovery) as a Performance Test Engineer, where he retired in 2020. David viewed life as an adventure. He loved learning new things and embraced God's creation. Sailing, water skiing, lobster fishing, scuba diving, birding, vegetable and sunflower gardening, and traveling were some of the many activities he enjoyed. While in Florida, David had also become a Black Belt in Taekwondo. David loved the Lord and over the years had led numerous Bible Studies in Lutheran Churches. He often prayed with the sick, grieving, destitute and imprisoned. Since he loved to play the guitar, David participated in various music ministries as well. Most recently David served as the Tennessee Lutheran Laymen's League / Lutheran Hour Ministries Executive Vice President.

Celebration of Life Services will be scheduled in the future at Christus Victor Lutheran Church, Knoxville, TN. Condolences may be left at www.mynattfh.com.

David was one of a kind. He rarely let the world get him down even though things could seem tough. He was one of the few who looked for a better day. He sacrificed a lot, working away from home for over a year to support his employer, but doing it the smartest way of anyone I ever knew. He was clever, and kind and never one to burden those around him. He carried his weight and more! I will never forget him bringing me some jalepeno peppers from his garden. I have, to this day, never encountered a hotter pepper! I accused him of watering them with gasoline! He always got a laugh out of that as did I. The world is less bright today at his passing - he will be missed! But I will see him again - thanks to our Saviour, whom David loved. Thank you Lord Jesus!

To David's family, I am deeply saddened by his passing. I worked with David for years on big Digital projects for Scripps. He was a wonderful professional and a kind man who was a delight to work with. Many late nights we conducted load tests online at 2am in the morning to ensure HGTV Dream Home launches and other important work was prepared and ready for the public. He had a great sense of humor and was so smart. He was one of the very good ones. Peace be with you all.

David and Cheryl were still like newlyweds, even after almost 42 years of marriage. David would check in with her during the day to make sure Cheryl was okay. When recently asked the question, “if there were still bench seats in the front of cars and trucks, would she still sit in the middle?” Cheryl blushingly responded, “yes.”
David was active in his church and the community, always willing to lend a hand and help out in any way he could. He left us too soon and will be sorely missed by many.
Praying for peace to you and David’s family during this hard time.
David, the world is a better place having had you in it!
Warm Regards, Jody Persino
