David Roche Hanning

Passed into the Great Beyond on Sunday, July 13, 2025. He was born in Saranac Lake in 1927 to Ellen G. Roche and Joseph D. Hanning and graduated from SLHS in 1945. The Adirondack region truly influenced the man he would become.

David joined the US Army 24th Infantry Division and was sent to Yale University to study Japanese. Sergeant Hanning interpreted for Division engineers overseeing the dismantling of fortifications and he later inspected manufacturing plants for any sign of munitions or weapons assembly. Discharged in 1947, he graduated from Paul Smith's College and St. Lawrence University. In 1952, he joined the Eastman Kodak Co. in Rochester and the Army Reserve 98th infantry division. He retired from the division in 1987 as a Lt. Colonel, having been the Adjunct General, and Assistant Chief of Staff G-1. He retired from Eastman Kodak in 1986 as Unit Director, Materials Management Division. Dave's volunteer service included 40 years with the National Ski Patrol and over 50 years with the American Red Cross.

Lt. Colonel Hanning was preceded in death by his wife Jean Conheady Hanning, his eldest son, Paul Hanning, and his two stepsons Steven and Scott (Trucker) Wright. He is survived by his wife Korleen Dickinson, his son Stephen (Donna) Hanning, daughter Shauna (Ernest) Newcomb, daughter Maura (Kenneth) Hanning Sims, step children Sheryl (Earl) Dunbar and Shellee Wright, and numerous grand and great grandchildren.

Service will be held at 3pm, Saturday August 9, 2025, at Messiah Lutheran Church 4301 Mount Read Blvd. Rochester, NY 14616. Reception will follow immediately at the Church hall. Lt. Colonel Hanning's cremains are to be interred in the family plot in Saint Bernard Cemetery at the convenience of the family.
