David A. Harcum

Beth and Joe, if worked for your Dad. He was a fantastic man to work for. I think of him often.

I still miss ornery, wonderful Dave. He made such an impression on me and has made me a better person. Much love to June, Beth and Joe.

My heart is heavy upon hearing of Dave's passing. There's a party in Heaven today; of that I am certain! He was a great leader!

So many have written such on-the-spot remembrances and tributes to Dave and to June. I had the wonderful opportunity to be included the past five years in Dave and June's ever-expansive array of acquaintances, work-mates, old and new friends, business associates, neighbors, family...and the thousands of children for whom the Harcums have made the biggest difference of all. I learned so much. I know June and her family are surrounded by so many who appreciate what the Harcums have been all about--making the most of all they can, and making the most for all they could reach.

I worked for Wilmington College for 10 years and I had the pleasure of working with Mr Harcum. He was always a pleasure to be around! My thoughts and prayers go out to his family.

I am going way back in time in Wilmington...back to the '50s. The Clinton County Youth Center opened (located in the basement under the Murphy Theater) so that we teenagers would have a place to go to socialize. Mr. and Mrs. Harcum were the advisors. I remember how they were always willing to listen to us and suggest possible answers. My sincere condolences to June Harcum and family. And thank you for being wonderful roll models for a bunch of teenagers back when. Becky VanDervort Thumma.

So sorry for the loss ,I did not no David, but Bates gave my dad Walter his first good job over at the factory on locust St., a great and well respected family, may God bless the whole family.

I had the pleasure of serving with Dave on the Wilmington College Board of Trustees for many years. He was an exuberant champion of good causes, a dedicated fundraiser and, together with Jean, a generous donor. Dave was a difference maker in all that he did. He will be missed by all who knew him.

Jovial, out-going, bigger than life, and having a self-deprecating sense of humor, Dave will be missed.

Dave was a long-time member of the board of the Center for Effective Discipline which was founded to end school corporal punishment.

He testified in support of banning school corporal punishment in Ohio at the State House calling himself a reformed paddler. (HB 406, 1-22-2008) It was finally banned in 2009.

He said:
(as a teacher)I never learned anything about discipline. When I began teaching, I modeled what I observed from my teachers and administrators and became a world class paddler. I mean that I paddled often and overzealously. I exhibited some characteristics of a slow learner in that it took me many years to realize that if paddling worked, why did I keep hitting the same students? Such was Dave's ability to use humor to give an important message.

His contributions to banning paddling and he and June's founding of the CAC Harcum House make lives of Ohio children kinder and safer. Rest in peace, Dave and condolences to June and the family.

Dave was amazing to be around. A champion of people, children, animals, and the arts. He and June paid it forward every chance they had to make a difference. They have received some public recognition but never sought any attention for their work. His humor was welcome and his positivity infectious. Our thoughts are with June, their family, and friends.

Extending my sincere condolences to the entire Harcum family. Dave was a special man who was on the cutting edge of innovations to improve public education in Ohio. It was a honor to know him and work with him during my tenure in Ohio. May Dave Harcum rest in peace knowing that he really made a difference.
