David Mackay Harvey Sept. 5, 1978-Dec. 27, 2015 David Mackay Harvey, 37, died of cancer on December 27, 2015 at home in Vancouver, BC. Mourned by his loving wife Erin Watt; parents Mike and Molly (Mary) Harvey, Brampton, ON; brother Andrew (Amanda Poste), nephew Sam, Oslo, Norway; Erin's parents Len and Veronica Watt, Chilliwack BC; her brother Jason Watt,(Tanya), nephew James,Yellowknife NWT; uncle David Harvey, Whistler, BC; aunt Pat Chamberlain, Kamloops, BC; uncle Malcolm Mackay, Halifax NS; many cousins and his loyal dog Bruno. Dave's sense of adventure and dedication to his friends and family defined who he was. His love for travel and passion for photography lead him to create evocative images from around the world. An unending energy for cycling allowed him to be outside as much as possible. Born in Halifax, NS, Dave grew up in Brampton, ON. He earned honours degrees in Geography and Outdoor Recreation from Lakehead University. In 2000 he hiked the 2147-mile Appalachian Trail in 131 days.He taught English in South Korea and Japan. Donations in memory of Dave can be made to the North Shore Mountain Bike Association (NSMBA.CA). Family and friends gathered in Vancouver, and will gather in Charlevoix, QC this summer to celebrate Dave's life.

I was shocked to hear about Dave. It was a pleasure to hand over my job to him in Ulsan, Korea. Best wishes to his family and friends.

I worked with Dave at Footprints. So young, yet mature, skilled, wise. So shocking, untimely, thought provoking. I will think of Dave more often now, in a new light. Maybe I'll meet him somewhere else again... At least I hope so. My condolences to Erin, the family, and Bruno.

I knew Dave only through my daughter Caroline Sturk's friendship with his brother Andrew. They were avid participants in their high school outdoor club, sharing hiking experiences that shaped their young adult characters and lives. I was impressed with Dave's adventurous spirit and followed news of his progress on the Appalachian Trail with great interest. He crammed a lot of living into his all too few years. My heart goes out to his wife, parents and brother but I hope they take some comfort in knowing that he made a powerful, positive impression on many people, including those who never had a chance to meet him in person.

I knew Dave from his early days in Ulsan - the activities and adventures he pioneered are the landmark memories of my time there: the scooter rallies, the frisbee on the banks of the Taewha, and the breathtaking photos. This world is a bleaker place without him, but it is richer for the time he spent here. My thoughts are with all those who loved him.
