David M. Hellman

David M. Hellman David M. Hellman, a lifelong resident of San Rafael, passed away on January 19, 2022 at the age of 74. He was preceded in death by his parents Roland and Jorna Hellman, both were longtime accountants and residents of San Rafael; his sister Annette Dean of Lufkin, Texas; and his beloved rescue dog, Ami, with whom he was frequently seen walking around the neighborhood. David is survived by his longtime partner Carol Chalker; four children from his marriage to Candace Hellman: Kia, Alaisha, Shana, David Hellman Jr., and his wife Sarah. David was looking forward to the upcoming birth of his first grandchild, a granddaughter. He is also survived by his sister Karen Rivers, her husband Michael Cohen, and his niece Cherie Rivers Ndaliko of Chapel Hill, North Carolina. David graduated from San Rafael High in 1965 before earning his bachelor's degree from the University of California at Berkeley in 1969, where he would also obtain his law degree in 1972. An attorney for almost 50 years, David was well known and respected in the Marin County legal community for his practice in the areas of taxation, estate planning, trusts, probate, and real estate through his firm the Law Office of David M. Hellman, as well as being the owner and President of Marin County Exchange Corporation, a 1031 Real Estate exchange facilitator. David was active in many civic and charitable organizations in the community. His current involvements included that he was a charter member of the Rotary Club of Mission San Rafael, Board Member of Marin Council Boy Scouts of America, and a Trustee of the Marin County Board of Education. David believed in living up to the ideals of the community organizations he served. An active Rotarian, he believed wholeheartedly in the principle motto "Service Above Self" and was never without his Rotary pin. David was as "trustworthy, loyal, helpful, friendly, courteous, kind, obedient, cheerful, thrifty, brave, clean, and reverent" as the standard of Boy Scouts of America. Serving on the Marin County Board of Education for 28 years, David demonstrated his support for the youth and education in Marin with a goal of providing equity, access, and opportunity. David tirelessly and consistently gave of himself for those around him. He will be greatly missed. There will be a celebration of his life at the Elks Lodge in San Rafael, 1312 Mission Ave., from 1-3 p.m. on Saturday, February 19, 2022.
