Carol,
My heart is Heavy with this news of David's passing. He was the highlight of my day every spin class I shared with him - not to mention the friendly conversations before and after class each day. I considered him a good friend much more so than a member of my class. He will be missed, but the Happy Memories will remain Alive and Well in our Hearts. My Heart is with you and your family.

Hi Carol,
I was so sad to hear of David's passing. I rarely get on FB and just received an email from an old friend telling me what had happened. I was David's secretary from 1979-1984. I worked for David and Jerry Hochbeg at Arter & Hadden, As you probably know, we were a small close-knit office and we have many fond memories. I recall the many many miles and marathons that David participated in. He seemed quite proud of qualifying and finishing the Boston marathon (several times I think). I do remember that he was a much happier person to be around when he got his running in. We spent many 24-hour days creating briefs and "rapifaxing" documents to Japan when that was the newest technology available. I can still see the thin strips of tape with holes in it going through the rapifax machine. We seemed to have to work past midnight a lot because of the time change between D.C. and Japan. I married in 1984 and moved to Nebraska, then to Chicago where I attended two years of my undergrad. Then my husband was offered a professorship at Oklahoma State University and we moved there in 1988. I finished my undergrad at OSU and received a full scholarship to the University of Tulsa Law School. After completing my degree and my husband attaining tenure he decided he wanted to work in industry again. We moved to Wisconsin and then two years later to St. Louis, where we are today. I joined an established firm and we are tiny, (6 lawyers in two offices), but have a great reputation in our community. I have three children (21, 17, 14) and I'm always running. The youngest plays traveling baseball so every weekend is taken up with that. I cannot count the ways that David impacted my life in a good way. He was incredibly supportive of my attempt to take up running. I have been a "big girl" my whole life and, had I participated in track in high school, I would have thrown shotput, but never run. David encouraged me to enter the Bonne Bell 10K in D.C. In 1983, even though I could only run a ten-minute mile. My goal was to finish and not walk but to keep running the whole way. I did it and he was there to congratulate me at the end, looking as proud as if I had run a three-minute mile! If guys had been allowed to run in that race he probably would have lapped me four times!
David's influence had a lasting effect on my health. I could often hear him in my head telling me to exercise and not to eat that donut!
David was so engaging, funny and had the best personality. Even when things went wrong at work (like the time I accidentally erased four hours of tapes he had dictated on an important brief and he had to start all over again), he kept his cool, didn't yell at me. Just started over.
He was rarely moody or depressed (except when he didn't get his run in) and kept the work environment light and funny. He used to say that "if we aren't having fun doing this, then why are we doing it?" I don't recall if I found him and sent a Christmas card or he found me, but after we moved to Missouri I remember getting a card from him. N note or information, just a signature. But I was happy that he to the time to send it. I very much wish I had stayed in touch. I know this must be a terrible time for you. Please accept my condolences. He was a fantastic person and he is, of course, welcomed up there. If you ever get to Missouri, please look me up!

Carol,
I was saddened to read of David's passing. It was such a gift to know both of you and I always remember the stories with appreciation of all that both of you accomplished together. The last time I saw him was at Leonard Cohen's concert, he was and will remain that light that shines through the cracks... blessings and peace to you and your family,

Carol....I cannot even begin to tell you how much I can't believe David is not here. I wear my shirt, "88 keys, 10 fingers, no problem"...thinking of our piano lessons together. Dear Carol,
We were deeply saddened to hear the news of David's passing. Please accept our condolences for your loss. I (Gary) met David through work in the late 1990's and am a better person for it. Always insightful, David would get to the heart of the matter at his own pace, leaving no stone unturned. I respected him tremendously and will deeply miss his insight, his smile and that tremendous laugh of his.

Dear Carol and Family, Doug and I are deeply sorry for your loss. We feel so fortunate to have met David when he came to Mexico with the rest of the family to celebrate Christmas. Although, we didn't know him that well, he was an enjoyable person and we loved touring with him. We know his death will leave a very large hole in your family. Bless all of you.
