David JOHANSEN Obituary

Published by Ottawa Citizen on Oct. 14, 2017.
JOHANSEN, David It is with great sadness that the family of David Johansen announce his sudden death of natural causes at his home in Ottawa on August 7, 2017. He was the son of the late Guy and late Ellen Johansen. David is survived by his brothers Gary (Lee Ann) and Alton Johansen, as well as his nieces Andrea and Cheryl and his nephew Scott (Laura) and great-nephews Connor and Dylan. After graduating from the University of New Brunswick Law School in 1974 David moved to Ottawa, where he worked as a lawyer for the Canadian Government in the Library of Parliament, providing research assistance for members of parliament and senators. David always held a soft spot in his heart for New Denmark, N.B. and it is for that reason that David was returned home to New Denmark, N.B. as his final resting place. A service was held on Saturday September 23 at the Bethany Lutheran Church New Denmark, N.B. Interment of his ashes followed at the Maple Grove Cemetery. A reception for friends and family was held at the Bethany Lutheran Church New Denmark, N.B. David lived in Ottawa for over 40 years and his kind gentle manner will truly be missed by his friends, former colleagues at the Library of Parliament and acquaintances from the Salvation Army, as well as his family and friends in New Denmark, N.B. and Toronto, ON. Friends are invited to join the Johansen family on Sunday October 22, 2017 to honor David at a Celebration of Life to be held at the Beechwood Cemetery Reception Centre from 2:00 - 5:00 p.m. In memory of David donations can be made to the Salvation Army or the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society of Canada.

My condolences to David's family. I worked at the Library of Parliament for ten years and I recall David as a hard working and respected researcher. In recent years, we often chatted along the Rideau River bike path. He was a kind soul. RIP David

I met David at the Ottawa leukaemia support group. He was always full of stories of his shopping exploits for deals. Last time I saw him he was just starting a new treatment and he seemed to be doing very well. My friend Jeff tried to call him in September to see why he hadn't attended the meeting but found his phone was not in service. We hoped that everything was okay When we attended the next meeting and he still wasn't present we found that unusual as he looked forward to the get togethers. My friend was worried so we started doing some checking and found the obit in the Ottawa citizen. I don't know his family but wanted to let them know that he will be missed

We are here at the leukaemia support group meeting in ottawa. We just found out about David's passing. Everyone was shocked as we thought he was doing well. We had a moment of silence in his memory. He will be missed by all.

We were deeply saddened by the news of Dave's passing. Dave was such a kind soul, who will be greatly missed by all of us on Prince Albert street who knew him. He would always stop by and chat or wave as he was cycling.
He had a lovely smile.
Our heartfelt condolences. May he Rest In Peace.

Such nice memories of Dave, ever since he bought the house on Prince Albert. I got to know him as a neighbour and fellow-bus traveler, heading downtown to our respective jobs. We both retired the same year. Nice conversations as he was riding his bike and passed me gardening out front. Always pleasant and lots to tell. His neighbours were a great part of his social interactions. We were so sorry to learn of his passing this summer. We still miss his voice....RIP Dave.

As a former colleague and friend, I was very sad this summer to learn of David's death. He was, as others have said here, both a gentle and sweet soul and a tenacious researcher. His entire career at the Library of Parliament was evidence of both. For someone who faced a number of challenges and particularly in the last few years, David had a remarkable ability to see the positive and hang on to it. We were lucky to have known and worked with him.

My condolences to David's family and friends. He often spoke fondly of family in New Brunswick. Although I met David at the Library of Parliament, we worked in different areas. It was when I moved to the east end and over the years we would meet on the bus and David would unwrap and show me his latest antique find. More recently, we had longer talks over past summers by the Rideau River pathway. David was engaging and friendly and he will be missed.

David was a kind and gentle soul who was always friendly and engaging and had a remarkable knowledge of collectables. I will remember him for his friendly and gracious manner. He was such a nice human being.

David was a colleague at the Library of Parliament, Research Branch, Law Division. When I joined the Research Branch in 1985, David was one of the first to welcome me. Over the years, we had many conversations about work, his family and his love of antique collecting.
David was an incredibly hard worker who left no stone unturned in his research.
I will always remember David fondly as a work friend and colleague, and with the highest regard for his work.

David and I were colleagues at the Library of Parliament for over 31 years. When I started in 1977, he was already there, welcoming me as a new co-worker . This is something he did for many others over the years. David was one of the hardest working people I have ever known. He was also one of the most supportive of people when anyone was going through difficult times. David is someone I will always remember.
