We knew David as a lover of golf and the New York Yankees but most of all...he loved his family. We knew David for a lot of years. Many of those years spent cutting Jerry and Chad's hair. Heaven has to be overwhelmed with joy, just knowing that David has arrived.

I am so sorry to hear about David. I have known him for many years at the Hair Company and he always spoke to me and would kid around as well. We also talked about the New York Yankees a lot of times because I knew he was a fan just like my late father (Horace, a.k.a., the “Lance Man”). David will be missed. My prayers for you, Joretta, and your family and are lifted as well for David.

We knew David because he was friends with my father, Captain Tony Roberson of the Davidson County Sheriff’s Office. My dad and David spent many years together on the board at Crimestoppers. I know dad considered David a class act, he introduced him to my mother and me at many Officer of the Year banquets. I am convinced that they have found each other in Heaven. My mom and I send prayers to his family for peace during this difficult time. We hope wonderful memories hold a special place in your heart.

I grew up in Lexington. I’m now 63 and I’ve spent most of my adulthood in New Orleans. I attended Cecil School and around age 11 my Dad decided he didn’t like my haircut and instructed me to walk up to the Square after school and get Beachum Miller to cut my hair at Sanitary Barber Shop. I had never seen so many barber chairs and it was busy so I moved down to the end and waited my turn. A young barber motioned me over and I went to his chair. When my Dad got home that evening he remarked how much better my hair looked. I explained what happened, but when asked, I didn’t know the name of the barber. Next time, my Mom went along. I still didn’t know the barber’s name, but she learned it, and I got another great cut. In a week or two, I saw an ad in the Dispatch for a new Barbershop opening on Highway 8. The picture of one of the barbers looked like my new barber. My Mom confirmed that it was David Koontz so we went there next time. David became a fixture for me cutting my hair all the way through college and any time I could get there when I was back in Lexington. The last time he cut my hair we decided it had been about 50 years since the first cut. I never had a bad haircut, and he dealt with me going from very short hair to shoulder-length and back again. I don’t fish, but I never minded hearing a good fish story. In later years, a haircut from David was an important part of knowing I was truly home and a chance to learn what had gone on in Lexington since my last visit. Whether it had been 5 months or 5 years, we picked up like it had just been a few weeks. His passing for me is the closing of a Chapter in my book of Lexington. His chair was a comfortable place to be. David represented everything good about Lexington and Davidson County. He treated me with respect every single time I was there, and I never heard a bad word about anyone come out of his mouth. I wish I had told him this while he was alive, but since I didn’t, I wanted to tell all of his family and friends. He is already truly missed. Your family is in my prayers.

Joretta and Shannon, I haven’t seen y’all in years, but I wanted you to know I’ll never forget how he spoke to his young baseball players as we practiced and played. I loved him for his way and his inspiration and probably never told anyone. I still have my first home run ball and it has the initials DK and VF on it. My heart breaks for the world’s loss and more importantly your loss. You will be in my prayers. Carlton Shoaf

Few people are privileged as I was to have shared a long friendship with David. From the time my family moved to our home on Helmstetler Road when I was about to start school until we graduated, David and I mutually enjoyed many happy times, whether it was after-school baseball, basketball, football, or horseshoes in his back yard (or mine), or, later on, Little League, swimming at the City Pool, and roller skating, or the many nights and days of sledding during the March snows of 1960, and continuing on through high school. I do not recall David ever saying an unkind word about anyone. I am absolutely certain that the joy and kindness in the David I knew as a child and young man continued through his long and full life, and, although he left us far too soon, his spirit will remain with us. Good bye old friend and good and faithful servant.

David was one of the nicest men I knew. He was a great father and husband. I was shocked when I learned of his passing. I would see him around either eating dinner or at the golf course and he always took time to speak or talk to me. That meant a lot, I always respected and admired him. I'm praying for comfort and peace for the family. I am so sorry for his passing.
