David Lerner Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Sep. 27 to Oct. 1, 2023.
Glendale - David Bryan Lerner died on September 23, 2023 at the age of 80, after a long and courageous battle against Alzheimer's Disease. He was born in Los Angeles to John and Helen Lerner. The family moved to Phoenix after David's birth, then Honolulu, Spain, and England, where he graduated high school. He earned a Master of Science in electrical engineering at MIT, then returned to England to work in a pub and enjoy his friends. He was drafted into the Army and served as a Science and Engineering specialist at White Sands Missile Range for two years, where he met and married Deborah. They moved to Los Angeles, then Phoenix. David worked as a software engineer and project manager for Litton Industries, Honeywell, and Honeywell Bull. He was a community activist and chaired a group who distributed employee contributions to community nonprofits. He served on the board of Lura Turner Homes. He transitioned to a more rewarding vocation, working for NAMI in various positions, and loved serving the community in these roles. Throughout life he pursued various interests: organizing/playing on the Honeywell Oldham Athletic Football Team (this team was the beginning of the Phoenix Recreational Soccer League), hiking, camping, running marathons (including the Boston Marathon), and raising his children. He coached children's soccer, little league, and Challenger Little League. He was known for his exceptional intellect, impeccable integrity, and dry wit. Family was the center of his life, especially his sons, Josh, Ben, and Sam, who survive him. He is also survived by his sister Karen, her husband Jeff, their four daughters and grandchildren; and by Ben's beloved wife Jenna and their daughters Sarah and Hailey. (Papa thought grandkids were the best.) His parents preceded him in death. An informal celebration of David's life will be held Saturday, October 14, 2023 at 10:30 AM at Shepherd of the Hills United Methodist Church, 13658 W Meeker Bl., Sun City West, AZ 85354. Friends are welcome to share in remembrance of a life well lived with luncheon following. Memorial contributions may be made in David's name to Lura Turner Homes or NAMI, although he generously supported a wide range of worthy causes.

I graduated from high school with David. I'm old and my memory is fading, but he was valedictorian or salutatorian of our high school class at Central High School in 1961. He was a bright guy, got top grades in every class. I'm sorry to hear of his battle with Alzheimer's, but happy to know he had a great family and a great life. Wow, how times flies. Owen Zuro

Gloria Abril, my first memory of David was attending a class he had set up for the participants coming from all of Arizona. The organization skills were unbelievable. He answered the same question for people two and three times, and continued on. I thought at some point he would blow up, but he did not.
he was great organizer of events, he did not forget anything. May he rest in peace.

I worked for David for a couple years and thoroughly enjoyed his wit and sense of humor. We would banter back and forth, and I think he enjoyed doing battle that way, but his wit was much sharper than mine and I typically wound up on the short end of the debate. What I will remember for the rest of my life, however, was the care and concern he showed me when my wife was diagnosed with non-Hodgkin's lymphoma. Well above the standard corporate response, he dealt with the situation on a very close and personal way and I'll never forget what he did for us.

I love the photo of David. It reminds me of his open heart, the way he wished well for all around him and had a rather avuncular attitude, in the best way. Our lives were poorer without him after we left Phoenix.

David and I shared many hours running together while we were both working at Honeywell. He was special.

I was at an adaptive water sports event for disabled children on Saturday, September 23, and while watching the kids having so much fun, I thought of David Lerner, an active advocate for children with disabilities and was wondering how he was doing. I worked with David for four years at the National Alliance on Mental Illness. David took the lead in the program, Parents and Teachers as Allies, educating teachers on mental illness in children. He was very dedicated and committed to this program. David's spirit drove the success of it. He was very awesome. There should be more people in the world today like David Lerner. He will be missed. My condolences to his family who he loved very much. Debbie Martinez
