David Loeser Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jul. 31, 2024.
Eugene - David Richard Loeser passed away on July 20, 2024, in Eugene, Oregon, at the age of 89. He was born on June 6, 1935, in Elizabeth, New Jersey, but spent most of his life on the seacoast of Maine. David studied Mechanical Engineering at Cornell University, graduating with a bachelor's degree. He then went on to achieve an MBA from Seton Hall in Finance, and subsequently earned a Chartered Financial Consultant degree from the American College. His career started as Vice-President in his family's steel fabrication business. Later David founded D.R. Loeser & Co., a Financial Management firm where he worked for the remainder of his career.

David's passion for adventure started on the shores of Cape Cod as a teenager, where his love for sailing was born. He loved recalling stories of the year he took his wife and five children on an incredible sailing adventure, involving many hair-raising moments like running aground in Barranquilla, Columbia. The family eventually settled in San Jose, Costa Rica, where they lived for another year, opening a restaurant where the whole family worked together. The stories remembered during this time are endless and just a fraction of David's wonderful tales of adventure and a lifetime of priceless memories.

Another passion of David's was flying. He obtained his pilot's license in his 20's, and later was able to pilot his speedy Mooney M20 to his home in the Bahamas, where island life suited him perfectly.

Later in life, while sailing in Greece, David met a woman that shared his passion for adventure, Vickie Lind. Vickie and David quickly fell in love and spent the last 20 years of his life together, traveling all over the world and sailing the beautiful waters of the Caribbean. They settled in Eugene in 2006 and loved the community and friends they made here.

Of all the accomplishments and adventures in David's life, none compared to the pride and joy of his five children. Of all their achievements, he was most proud of their character and the kind, caring adults they became.

David is preceded in death by his son, David (Rick). He is survived by his wife Vickie; former wife, Susannah and their children, Betsy, Jamie, Rob and Peter; fourteen grandchildren and six great-grandchildren: his sister, Joan; his brother-in-law and closest friend of 71 years, Stan; many nieces and nephews; and his hero and unofficial son from Barranquilla, Carlos.

When David was given his cancer diagnosis in May of this year, his first reaction was, "I am 89 years old, and what a great life I've lived!" During the last two months of his life, his humor never left as he was cracking jokes and sharing those stories of adventure. David passed peacefully surrounded by his adoring wife, Vickie, and his loving children.

I will always be grateful for David Loeser's kindness. This generous man took my brother Carlos Ivan Guerrero under his wing. As a result Carlos came to know Jesus our Lord and Savior, acquired a great education, and was able to help all of us, his family. Mr. Loeser's kindness did not stop there. My brother also shared the word of God with all of us, and we all have heard the gospel and have come to know the saving grace of Jesus Christ our Savior. Thank God for David Loeser. May God Bless all of David Loeser's family, and may David today rest in peace in God's presence.

It is because of this man that I am enjoying the beauty of this country. May his souls rest in peace.

I´ll never forget our going to a "senior dance", David, Vickie and a few others. It was not well attended, music a little lame, and David remarking "Has it come to this?". His acerbic wit was so infectious and made even awkward situations funny.
