David Mark Hughes Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Sep. 24, 2025.
David Mark Hughes, 75, of Duluth, MN passed away unexpectedly on June 14, 2025, while away on a fishing trip at one of his favorite places - Lake Nipigon in Ontario, Canada.

He is survived by his wife, Carol, and their three children, Patrick (Ellie), Tiffany (Bill Owens) and Alycia (Chris Smith); grandchildren, Grace, Hailey and Tyson (Tori); great-granddaughter, Aliza; siblings, John (Deb) Hughes, Jeff (Nada) Hughes, Doug (Susan) Hughes and Lisa Hughes Zellmer; and many special nieces and nephews.

A Duluth native, David grew up in the Kenwood neighborhood and attended Cathedral High School, Class of 1967, where he was part of the infamous MN State Catholic Tournament hockey team, winning titles in 1965, 1966 and 1967. He attended the University of Minnesota Duluth, then briefly served in the Navy with the Seabees, which ended with an honorable discharge upon his father's sudden passing.

David then pursued a lifelong career in the trades as an iron worker and was a proud member of the Iron Workers Local 512. An avid sportsman, he enjoyed spending time fishing, hunting, watching hockey and relaxing in the sauna at the family cabin on Island Lake in Duluth.

David was preceded in death by his parents, Chester and Jeanne (Branscombe) Hughes and sisters, Patty Hughes (Matt) Mezger and Cathie (Pokey) Trachsel.

A Celebration of Life will be held on Thursday, October 2nd at 2 p.m. at The Buffalo House, 2590 Guss Road in Duluth. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests remembrances of David can be directed to an outdoor or hockey charity of your choice.
