David McMahon Obituary

Published by Star Tribune from Mar. 29 to Mar. 30, 2011.
McMahon, David J. 74, of Edina, MN passed away on March 27, 2011 after a lengthy illness. Preceded in death by his parents, John F. and Helen McMahon; brother, Gary; and grandson, Thomas. Survived by his loving wife, Colleen Anne (Phelan) and their seven children, Cammy Baer (Tim), David Jr., Kevin (Kate), Danny (Colleen), Mary Kate McFadden (Mike), Margo Fochler (Steve), and Julie McMahon. Also survived by his beloved grandchildren: Jack, Michael, Matt, Danny, Meg, Joseph, Jane, Maura, Emmett, Maeve, Danny, Fiona, Seamus, Nuala, Conor, Patrick, Molly, Sean, Brendan, Danny, Libby, Jane, Tanner, Lily and Aidan. Also survived by brother Steve (Trish), and sisters Carol Young (George) and Patty Cumming (Charles), and sister-in-law Zita McMahon. Born in Brooklyn, New York on Sept. 17, 1936, Dave was raised on Long Island as a long-suffering Brooklyn Dodgers fan, and developed a life-long love of music, his Irish heritage, and the beach. Fulfilled a childhood dream by attending and graduating from the University of Notre Dame, and remained a devoted fan of the Fighting Irish. Met Colleen Phelan of Beaumont, Texas in the spring of 1958 and thus began one of the great love affairs of all time. Dave and Colleen celebrated their 51st Wedding Anniversary this past January. In 1999, Dave retired after 39 years at General Mills, where he served as Director of Trade Relations representing the company in its dealings with key customers and industry groups. Although Dave accomplished much during the course of his career, his proudest and happiest moments were those spent in the company of his wife, children, and grandchildren. His deep faith in God, personal integrity, loyalty, commitment to family, and sense of humor were all qualities that defined his life and were what made him the best spouse, father, grandfather, or friend a person could ever have. We love you, Poppy. The family wishes to thank Dr. Mark Menge, and all of the physicians, nurses, aides and staff of Frauenshuh Cancer Center. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, 1311 Mamaroneck Ave, White Plains, New York 10605 or www.lls.org/donate. Interment Lakewood Cemetery. Memorial Mass of Christian Burial 11 AM Friday, April 1 with visitation one hour prior to the Mass at the Church of Our Lady of Grace, 5071 Eden Ave., Edina. Visitation 3-6 PM Thursday, March 31 at: Washburn-McReavy Edina Chapel 952-920-3996 West 50th St. & Hwy 100

I will never forget David's positive attitude, smiling face, wonderful & helpful counsel at GMI, and fun shenanigans during N.D. breaks in N.Y.C . And, Marcia and I are thankful for the times that we were able to get our young families together in Mpls. I regret that we did not attend David's celebration of life, but think and pray for him everyday . God bless and love to all the McMahon's, Jerry (Butch) and Marcia Hayes

Poppy,
We (the McMahon grandchildren) lost one of our greatest fans in your passing. The efforts you made to be a part of your grandkid's most important life moments was remarkable. I know that you would have been at every event of every grandkid if you could have been in 10+ places at once. Now you can. Whether it's a sport event, a school event, important life event, a moment of triumph, or a moment of needed encouragement, I have no doubt you'll be smiling down on each and every one of us, the proudest grandfather in heaven!

Love you and miss you,
Jack

Pops,
Thank you for the example you showed us in staying true to your values at all times, loving your wife and family, honoring God, revering the Virgin Mary, finding laughter and joy in all aspects of life, cheering on your Irish, balancing your many responsibilities with distinction, and carrying your suffering with dignity and grace. I miss you terribly, but take solace in the countless great memories, and the knowledge that your spirit lives on in each of those your remarkable life has touched.
I love you Pops,

Thank you for taking the time to share kind (and sometimes funny) entries about our beloved Pops in this guestbook. It's been a source of great comfort during this trying time. We also cherish wonderful memories of this GREAT person: Poppy, David, Big Tuna, Dad. My personal favorite is my determined Father walking me down the sandy aisle last November, in his adorable bermudas and "compound" tie. Poppy, you shined the whole weekend and I feel so blessed to have celebrated with you! Your rendition of "Let there be peace on Earth" during the ceremony took it to 11. God bless you Pops, my amazing and beautiful Mother and wonderful siblings and relatives. We are blessed beyond measure. Love Margo

Dear McMahon Family,
Dan wrote today and told me about the death of your wonderful husband and father. I will always cherish this great man who loved his family and Notre Dame. He always came to Dillon to attend Mass after the Notre Dame games. Whenever I saw him, I felt better about life.
I remember that Cammy and her mother would walk him over to the stadium for a game and then I would see them walking back towards Dillon.
But I will always remember when Dillon was playing for the Interhall Football championship in the stadium. It was either Dave or Dan who said, "it means so much to our father that we are actually playing a football game in the stadium.
Your husband and father is what Notre Dame is all about.
I will say Mass for him tonight. I hope you all know how great he was and how much he was loved at Notre Dame.
Peace and Love,
Fr. Joe Carey

Colleen and McMahon family,
Marcia and I will always remember Dave's smiling face (with that beautiful fang) and fun-loving attitude. I do not recall ever seeing a sad or irritable face on David. What a guy! Often, we fondly think of, and do miss, our time together in Minnesota with our young families. We know that God has blessed Dave, and you, and we pray that He will continue to show you a clear path for this earthly journey.
Much love,

Aunt Colleen and McMahon cousins,
Please know we are sending big Beaumont hugs your way. Our thoughts and prayers have been with y'all throughout Uncle Dave's cancer fight and now that he's in heaven smiling down on us. I warmly recall his laughing at family reunion charades, engaging storytelling of family adventures and mishaps, his genuine interest in the ever expanding cousin count, and most of all, the incredible and obvious loving pride with which he spoke of his own children, grandchildren, and wife. I miss him dearly and am blessed to have known and loved him.

I was sorry to have missed the celebration of David's life last week. In the relatively short time that I knew him I grew to appreciate his kindness, wit, strength, integrity and character. Seeing him walk Margo down the aisle from my vantage point was a sight that I will never forget. I am amazed at the outpouring of love and memories on this board and all around me. I will miss him much and an only sorry that I did not have more time to know him even better. Love and prayers to all of you.

In September of 1949, Dave, along with some eighty or so of his peers, entered Seton Hall Catholic High School in Patchogue, Long Island, New York. Our parents’ goal in sending us to Seton was to continue our guided maturing process into young adulthood in a controlled environment, supervised by a small dedicated group of Sisters of Charity from Halifax, Nova Scotia. Several of us, Dave included, had older siblings who were attending Seton, or who had in the past. The campus of the High School consisted of four cottages divided down the middle into two classrooms each; a gymnasium, auditorium, lunchroom, assembly hall, and ballroom in a single structure; a three story wooden convent; and a multipurpose football, baseball, and other outdoor activity field that at times was under water. Class duration was regulated by a hand-held bell.

Dave thrived in this environment, as did many of his fellows. For him, Seton presented multiple options for growth; and grow he did. He recognized and took full advantage of each opportunity offered in learning, athletics, and the arts. He played football, baseball, and basketball, the three school sports. He set the goal for others in public speaking. He acted in dramatic productions. He sang (beautifully) as a part of a coral group and as a soloist. He early learned to lead and was active as a Class Officer each year. He was admired and respected by the entire student body. He was a friend to his classmates and a pace setter.

Seemingly without trying, Dave set a high bar and challenged his contemporary fellow students and friends to measure up. And it worked. Each of us who passed our teenage years with Dave McMahon gained greatly from his friendship.

The members Seton Hall Class of ’53 are all reaching seventy-five years in age. Several of our group has gone on to their eternal reward. Dave has joining our friends. We who remain now have another classmate and friend looking out for us, until it is our turn rejoin him, in heaven.

Please accept our sincere condolences at the passing of our dear friend Dave.

What a gift we 5 St. Mary's girls were given last November at Margo's wedding as we sat having breakfast with Poppy. His love of life, his exuberant story telling, his true appreciation for those he loved could not have shined through any brighter. He was in his element! He clearly was a gem among men and we all feel blessed to have such a fond memory etched upon our minds. He will be very missed by many, that is for sure. Some of my fondest memories growing up were sitting around the MGC pool listening to the "grown ups", argue about Notre Dame football. David was leading the charge for his beloved Irish, while my father, Endy and Fleming were always finding as many faults in the Irish as possible, with laughter all around. They of course all loved Notre Dame as much David did, but it was just too much fun to watch him go on and on. Any time he entered the room, the party was about to begin. He was a wonderful man who will be greatly missed.

Dear Colleen and Family,
I extend to all of you my deepest sympathy on the passing of Dave. I will just repeat what you have already heard many, many times -- that Dave was a wonderful person that always added happiness to all occasions that he was a part of. During the times that I saw him professionally at General Mills he always made me feel better, and I hope I was able to help him.
I also remember the time that we happened to see each other while on a cruise, I think it was on the Queen Mary. This was when I first learned about his recent medical issues, but that didn't dampen our visit together. He appeared to be the happiest person on the ship.
I am sorry that I was unable to attend the memorial service today, because I was out of town.
Sincerely,

I am so sorry and sad that Dave has lost his battle with cancer. He was a lovely man with a fabulous hug, laugh and voice. I can recall, as though I can hear him right now, singing Danny Boy at Cammy's wedding....made me cry then and it makes me cry now. I see that many others have written about his singing as well. What a wonderful memory.

I can only imagine the void for all of you in his passing. I will have you all in my thoughts and prayers. Much love!

I have never left David's company without feeling better about myself. He always wanted to know what I was up to, and he was always so interested, and engaged in whatever new misadventure I told him about. From the time I was young he always spoke to me like we were old friends. Which for many years now I have considered that we were. I have a feeling that right now God is nodding his head to David's comments and mumbling "I am impressive, aren't I?"
I was lucky to have known him.

Aunt Colleen and McMahon Family,
Uncle Dave epitomized the goodness and peace that I strive to have. He was an incredible example for any husband, father, uncle, or Irishman. His wit, laugh and singing were renown; but his affection for family and his genuine concern for others always inspired me. He always wanted to be current on each of his nieces and nephews ( which as we all know is a near impossible task ). When conversation was reversed, his pride in his children and affection for his wife were always counterbalanced with self-deprecation. Such a wonderful example to us all. Elizabeth and I extend heartfelt condolences and love.

Dear Ones, Your dad brought so much joy and healing to this often sad and wounded world.
(his smile, humor,"Danny Boy",with the Uncle Butch rendition of " Jeremiah was a bullfrog", his INTENSE dislike of Okert, his "meeting the in-laws"repertoire, as well as his hilarity at the strange Beaumont names.),there are many, many more,as you well know.

He will be greeted by all of his loved ones who preceded him with songs of joy. And jokes.

Please know he will be deeply missed by the entire PHELAN Boy.

Daddy Ed and Auntie M. Love you all with deep sympathy.

March 31, 2011

To the McHahon Clan,
Dave displayed to me when I was at a young age his gift of self-depreciation. He could make stories of his family's trips to Texas, which could be viewed as horrifying, comical. He taught me that I could bring humor to my own worrisome life events. That was his gift to me. Dave brought his family to Texas for each family reunion. He would haul all of his family, from where I perceived to be were the frozen tundras of Minnesota, all of the way down to the mosquito infected Texas Gulf Coast. Dave would rent beach houses, and form the decks of those beach houses, the only thing he could see would be oil rigs, tankers, brown water with brown beaches, so I knew he didn't come for the view. Dave came to bring us his wife and children so they could see their Texas inlaws even though he was loving considered an outlaw. That was his gift to us all.
Peace and our love,
Uncle Harry, Aunt Cecile, Aislinn, Dennis, and Madison

To the McMahon Family,
Your dad was our number one support/fan at St Joe's. His sense of humor and grand wit made everyone's day a little brighter. We are saddened by his death. We were blessed to have known him.

We would like to send our deepest condolences to Mrs. McMahon and the entire McMahon family. I have such fond memories of our summers growing up at MGC with our fellow Irishman. I remember Mr. McMahon leading the way to the pool with all the McMahon kids in step. My parents especially loved that New York "accent." My Mom was so sad to hear the news of his passing and sends her sympathy. Unfortunately, she will be unable to attend the funeral because she is in Arizona. Again, we are so sorry for your family's huge loss.

Dear Colleen and Family,
At times like this we especially remember the good times. The St. Paddy's parties with Dave's rendition of "Danny Boy" and all the fun-filled times together. Our thoughts and prayers are with you and your wonderful family.
All our Love, Tom and Gerry

To my dear friend Cammy,
I have such wonderful memories growing up with you and your family. Your dad was always so joyous and a great sport when we pulled our pranks. He made me feel special as he did with everyone he was with - and he made this world a better place.
What caring, loving people all you McMahon's are and you're blessed to have each other to lean on at this sad time.
Love to you all,

Harlan Mork

Dear Aunt Colleen and all of my wonderful McMahon cousins of all generations. Uncle Dave was without question one of the finest men I have ever known. The Dave & Colleen McMahon Family stands as the finest testament of the Love that was given and received. I am certain that Uncle Dave has brought his own special Love (smile, laughter & Danny Boy) to our friends and family that are blessed to be in Heaven with him today.

I Love You All and you are in my thoughts and Prayers,

Mickey, III

He was the rare individual that made any room (or any environment) he walked into a happier, more fun place to be-- which just might be the highest calling any of us have during our time here on Earth. Thoughts and prayers go out to the enitire McMahon family.
