I´m so sorry to hear about Dave´s passing. He was my teacher at Cape Fear Community College and mentor around 1992. I was just thinking of giving him a call to see how he and family were doing. I was shocked to see his obituary. My condolences. I remember Dave was always smiling and loved talking about his son Casey. He would tell cute stories everyday and his favorite at that time... how Casey would love to see purple m&m´s created! He cared about everyone around him. He will be greatly missed. I know he is smiling down on everyone. God bless his family with peace and love.

Our family spent many happy vacations in the Wilmington area and no beach trip was complete without a brunch stop at Causeway Cafe. Dave's unmistakable yell will never be forgotten and we were always appreciative of his letting us write an out-of-state check for our great food and service. Wrightsville Beach has lost a true legend. May he rest in peace. Thanks for the memories!

My husband and I just got back from Quarantining in Fl and read in the WB Magazine of Daves passing and are just so sad. We were very frequently at the Causeway and he would always be there to greet us with a smile and a laugh. We will always remember you Dave every time we look at the old Causeway.

A true Wrightsville Beach legend. He was friendly to everyone he met & never forgot a face. Casey is a testimonial to what a truly great person David was spiritually as a human being!

I loved taking my girlfriend, who became my wife to Causeway Cafe for years. Then, came two little boys who we enjoyed many weekend mornings eating the best waffles and hash-browns in town! It was always such a relief to hear Mr. Monaghan yell, "TREY!" from the front porch of Causeway. He will be missed. Thank you and rest in peace.

We are so sad to learn that David has passed away. I happened up on him last week at the Town recycle center and had a very brief chat about missing him at the Causeway and his retirement.

Over the many years of our vacation month at the beach our family enjoyed many meals at the Causeway. Our girls were raised on chocolate chip Mickey waffles.

We miss him at the Causeway and will miss him more now.

May Gods strength be with you all.

Dave was a wonderful man and he and Penny were very happy. I was his insurance agent and always enjoyed helping him. He was so very proud of Casey. This was a real loss and I know how much this hurts. Jean Watson

Dave was such a character. I came to the cafe every time I came to town and for whatever length of time I was in town, I never ate breakfast anywhere else. I loved hearing Dave yell out the customers names when their tables were ready. I always had to laugh each time he did that. And its was always great fun talking to Dave. He was very loved by many. I was so sad when the cafe closed but understood that Dave wanted the rest and time with his family. He well earned it and it must have been so hard to say goodbye to that chapter of his life. Its so hard saying goodbye to him now and knowing he wont be around WB when I come there. To all the family, my sincere condolences. I will always remember Dave and the cafe. Im so sorry that he hadnt to go so soon

I met Dave way back in the early 1970's through a mutual friend Norman Brooks. From around 72 through 74, we all enjoyed those years in earnest! Although the years passed us all by; whenever I was visiting Wilmington & Wrightsville Beach, I would stop by The Causeway Café & eat some food & visit a bit.

Unfortunately; this time called "LIFE", passes us to quickly! Only to learn of the loss of "SOMEONE SPECIAL, LIKE DAVE". I am saddened that the last time I saw Dave was in 2007 on a visit at the Causeway Café. It was as if no time at all had passed when he hollard johnny mac! And we were back enjoying each other's company and sharing updates as well as remembering those early years full of shenanagan's. My visits to Wilmington had become brief from 2000 through 2007, and I never had the opportunity to meet Penny & Casey.

Having had the pleasure of knowing Dave for so long, I cannot imagine the grief his family is experiencing. I am sure though that all his family can take pleasure on the positive impact Dave has had on all of us who have been blessed to know him as a friend.

Knowing Dave; I can imagine him at his new place along side St. Peter, calling the names of new arrivals, greating them with a smile, engaging them in a maner befitting a solid, fun loving & occasionally mischevious friend.

You are already missed, my friend!
