David Pettigrew Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jan. 28, 2025.
David Allan Pettigrew was born on February 4, 1941, in Cape Girardeau, MO, to Ural and Elsie Pettigrew. He was the 3rd youngest of 7 children. According to him, he had the best childhood, fondly remembering his mother's fabulous cooking, caddying and playing golf with his dad at the country club, and lots of fun times with the "guys." He was a gifted athlete and played basketball and other sports at Central High School as well as being elected class president. After graduating, he attended Miami University of Ohio, Washington University in St. Louis, and ultimately received his BA from Southeast Missouri State University.

In his twenties, he married and soon after had two children, Mary and Paul. They lived in Cape for many years. While there, he founded and was President of the Rotary Club of Cape Girardeau, marking the beginning of many years of community involvement.

David moved to San Diego, CA, in 1975, where he met his wife of nearly 50 years, Suzanne. His best friend lived across the street from her parents, and they were set up on a blind date. The rest was history. They had 3 children, Joe, Stephanie, and Chris.

David was an active member of the community. He served as President of Pt. Loma Little League while his children were players there, coached baseball and soccer teams, was a Boy Scout Scoutmaster, and was an active member of his church, All Soul's Episcopal, and served on the Vestry and as Senior Warden. He was a proud member of the Rotary Club of Pt. Loma, serving as President in 2004-2005. His favorite community event was Ride the Point, which honored one of his friends taken by cancer too soon.

A Jack of many trades, at various times in his life David owned an insurance company, worked for a trucking agency, was in the Air Force and received his pilot's license, and was president of a fishing and tackle company, which took him to Taiwan on business many times. But he may best be remembered as a local real estate agent in Pt. Loma for over 30 years, with most of those years spent at Coldwell Banker. He was respected by colleagues and clients alike.

In his free time, he was an avid golfer, playing most of the courses in the county, with Sea and Air being his favorite. He appreciated all kinds of music, from gospel to classic country to Pink Floyd. He loved sitting in the sun, had the greenest of thumbs, and never met a dog (especially a sheepdog) that he didn't like. From watching baseball and football and golf on tv to watching his grandkids play all their sports, David was happiest when sports were involved.

He is survived by his wife Suzanne, children Mary, Paul, Joseph, Stephanie, and Christopher, grandchildren Charles, Claire, Taylor, Colin, and James, and sisters Julie and Sara and many nieces and nephews. Services will be held at All Souls' Episcopal Church in Pt. Loma on Feb. 1 at 1:00 p.m. and all are welcome to attend. The service will be livestreamed on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/allsoulspointloma/videos (A FB account to view the service isn't necessary). Alternatively, the service can be accessed on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@allsoulspointloma2121/streams.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations in David's name to the Alzheimer's Association of San Diego, Rotary International, and All Soul's Episcopal Church.

Dear dear Suz and Family, David was one of the finest men I have ever known. Dick and Bob and David...The Three Musketeers...always in my life for 60 years+. Lots of trips within the fishing tackle world (David had his business, as did Dick and Bob was Their Advertising man). Trips to California for fun and to Sedona for more fun... Suz and I were there and became instant friends. I cherish our memories and will always remember "My Honey do"man....David could/would always help me when no one else would/could. Lol I love you Suz and hope we will meet again, Nance
