Shawnee, Kansas - David Paul Roberts passed away on July 21, 2021. Dave was born in Des Moines, Iowa, the only child of Paul and Pauline Roberts. Due to his father's profession of Civil Engineer, Dave lived in several cities in Iowa as he grew up.
After leaving high school a year early, Dave attended the University of Chicago and Iowa State University, graduating from Iowa State with a degree in Engineering. In 1960 Dave accepted a job with The Bendix Corporation where he was employed until his retirement in 1997. During his employment he worked in the Engineering Department and as a Manager in the Manufacturing Department.
Dave was preceded in death by his wife of 57 years, Joyce Phipps Roberts. Dave and Joyce especially enjoyed their many travels and adventures together, both in the U.S. and internationally. They also enjoyed cheering on the K.C. Chiefs, his Iowa State Cyclones, and the K.C. Royals.
Dave enjoyed playing cards with his long-time friends, along with a nice glass of Cabernet, or maybe a Malbec. His enjoyment of detailed and varied projects led to his completion of a television set and an organ for the family, along with painting Christmas Santa's and building a rolltop desk. Dave was also a fan of science fiction fantasy with one grandson and building furniture with another grandson.
Dave was a unique person and will be greatly missed. He would be happy for you to have a nice dinner, a great glass of red wine, some fine chocolate and remember him for a moment or two.
Dave is survived by two daughters and their families; Julia Thomas of New Orleans, LA; Debbie and Chris Wegs of Quincy, IL; 8 grandchildren, Anne Thomas, Emily and Roderick Guillery, Seth Thomas, David Brink, Scott Yates, Jordan and Anastasia Wegs, Katie Wegs, Hannah and Levi Campbell; and great grandchildren Atticus, Andrew, Dylan, Demi, and Theo.
Dave is also survived by two stepdaughters and their husbands, Karen and Ron Jenkins of Plano, TX and Janet and Alan Hixson of Grandview, MO; 3 grandchildren and their families, Kimberly and Bainbridge DeWeese and their sons, Parker and Jack, Plano, TX; Zachary and Kelly Hixson and their children, Zoey and Aiden, Lawrence, KS; Ryan and Tara Jenkins, Austin, TX.
Dave is survived by his sister-in-law Connie Phipps Shires and her husband Ed; and many cherished nieces, nephews and friends.
