Of course, the missing of a friend is always hard and I feel bad for the family. My condolences go out to them. But he´s up there probably having a better time than we are. We´ll all be together again someday.

Friends are the Family You Choose

1994- a young couple moved in next door to us. We had 3 children and 2 dogs; they had one dog and two cats. What did we have in common? Who knew that Dave and Marilyn, because you can´t talk about Dave without saying Marilyn- they will always be such a pair, would become the family we will always treasure. Dave ran a printing business. We had a small law firm. Dave did our printing. We did his legal work.
As our kids grew, their first "job" was taking care of Dave and Marilyn´s pets. "Toduck" tried to rescue Matt when we went swimming in their pool. When we couldn´t find a cat sitter for our not so nice cat, Dave the cat whisperer did it for us. Dave and I shared a birthday. Rarely were we even in the same place on July 17th we always made sure to exchange birthday greetings. So life progressed and Dave and Marilyn were at all of our family milestones: bar mitzvahs, bat mitzvahs, graduations, weddings. In fact, they hosted the wedding showers for all three of our kids and a baby shower for our daughter. That was memorable because the power went out but Dave Jerry-rigged something and it was one of the most fun parties ever! They vacationed at our Florida condo; we had a family vacation at their Owasco lake house. Marilyn and I walked in the mornings, she with Emma or Koda , one of their beautiful golden retrievers and me with our very strange cat, Joey. We weren´t the same religion but that never stopped us from celebrating together- Dave always had 2 helpings of matzah ball soup and he had no problem drinking the mandatory 4 glasses of wine at Passover. When Becky was in college and needed a summer job, Marilyn came through and Becky got to work with her at Harris. That´s when my family found out how indispensable Marilyn was there. My husband, Sid smokes cigars . Every night after work he would have a cigar on our front porch and within minutes, I would hear Dave´s voice. It was like the tv show where 2 neighbors talked over the back fence. And then if you don´t know anything about maintaining a home in upstate New York- 2 words: snow and leaves. Dave and Sid formed quite a bond over those 2 words. If one was home and the other wasn´t during a snow storm the one who was home cleared out the other´s driveway. Leaves, - well that was a lot of mutual commiseration- do you know how much work it is to rake, blow and bag 100+ bags of leaves? When our son-in-law began managing a brewery, the Scheftics and Farbers went there regularly. One of my favorite memories of Dave was when he said something "over the line"- Marilyn would immediately say: DAVE. He would immediately look sheepish, and then get a big smile on his face, because he loved nothing more than "getting to " Marilyn. When our daughter had that baby that the Scheftics´ hosted a shower for, our daughter decided that even though Jews don´t have godparents, her son was going to have them: the Scheftics.. It couldn´t have been any other way. When our family found out that we had lost Dave, Dylan, that godson, asked what happened, and we told him that an angel took him. Of course he did. Dave Scheftic was one of the hardest workers we ever knew, he loved Marilyn, his pets´, he was a devoted friend who always displayed a generosity of spirit. Dave was the first person I head say that friends are the family you choose. Yes you were, Dave. We Farbers love you and miss you!.

My nephew david is sadly missed. he was a great nephew. I remember back in the day Dave,Marilyn my niece Mel would get their friends together and drive from penfield to my farm outside of Auburn and what a Hoot! all of us had. Dave especially loved it there- he would always comment on how peaceful it was- that is until we all got the party going. we hooted n hollowed from sunrise till the next sunrise. we could do that cause there were no neighbors. I remember introducing Dave n the rest to the bluegrass hoedowns and it was one of my favorite memories. It was good clean fun for all to have..Dave I miss you and will love you always..Uncle Jimmy

Our sons have spent the last five days talking about all of their great memories of Dave. Swimming in the pool, times at the cottage, checking out his bike, stuffing fliers for the print shop, so many parties, and infinite laughs! They mentioned how some of their earliest memories include Dave and Marilyn. They have toasted him numerous times. We love Dave and will miss him terribly. Our hearts are with you Marilyn!

Dave and I were school buddies in Penfield. Both of our Dads owned printing companies and we shared a love for hotrods, bikes & boats. His dad would always give me a job at Eastern printing when I needed extra work. The Sheftics would even take me along on vacations to the lake and skiing in the mountains. Dave and I shared some of the best memories of my life over the years. Thanks, Brother!

Remembering Dave: A Tribute to a Cherished Soul and a Life Lived with Kindness

Dave, a figure held dear to our hearts, will always be remembered for his empathy, warmth, and laughter. He was not just a friend; he was family. As the years passed, Dave became a significant part of my life, sharing valuable insights and casting light on life's crucial elements such as fast boat, colorful jokes, stiff drinks, and steadfast support for the Republican party. As an adult, it was always a delightful experience to return home, knowing that Dave and Marylin would join us, sharing laughter and tales on the deck.

In my younger years, I would look forward to his weekend visits to the camp, where he would let me help him with whatever task he was undertaking. Dave was a man of generosity, always ready to extend a helping hand to his friends. A standout memory is when he presented me with my first mini enduro motorcycle. Many subsequent years were spent relishing the thrill of navigating nature trails and open fields, a joyous pastime initiated by Dave.

Dave's compassion and genuine concern for my well-being, and that of many others whose lives he graced, will continue to have a profound and enduring impact. His departure has left a void that resonates deeply with everyone fortunate enough to have known him. Dave's legacy, characterized by his kindness and influential presence, will endure. The memories of Dave, his generous spirit, and the substantial influence he wielded in our lives will forever be cherished. May you find everlasting tranquility, reunite with Coda, Ralph, and all those who departed this world too prematurely, and collectively keep a watchful eye over us from the heavens above.

We are heartbroken with Dave´s passing and send our condolences and love to his loving wife Marilyn. We have so many wonderful memories of Dave between the many dinner parties at our homes and weekends at his lakeside cottage. Dave and Marilyn also helped us with printing and a wedding shower for our daughter´s wedding. They are the such gracious welcoming hosts and friends. We are grateful for his life and how much he enriched our lives through his friendship! Peace be with you Dave!
