David was born January 15, 1931, in Grinnell, the son of Ervin Leslie and Elizabeth Marian Pfund Schultz. He was raised in the Grinnell area, attended Malcom Country School #5, and was a 1948 graduate of Grinnell High School. Following graduation, he helped his father and neighboring farmers.
In 1952, he was drafted in the United States Army and served with the 501st Armored Medical Company in Germany as an ambulance driver during the Korean Conflict.
Upon discharge, he returned to Grinnell where he was employed with the Donaldson Company from 1956 until 1964 when he took over the complete farm operation after his father became ill. During the 1970's, he drove a school bus for the Grinnell-Newburg School District, and worked for Dr. B.G. Wiltfang in farm operations and apartment maintenance for 27 years.
On June 17, 1956, he was united in marriage with Donna JoAnne Eldridge at Trinity Lutheran Church. She passed away in 1987. On July 3, 1999, he was united in marriage with Shirley Joan Hoskey, also at Trinity Lutheran Church.
David was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church and will be remembered for his strong Christian faith; he was very active as a council member, treasurer and member of the Brotherhood. He enjoyed working outdoors and taking care of his yard and flowers. He was proud that there were rarely dandelions in the yard or weeds in the garden.
