Mr Seagraves or "coach" to me, was such an important person in my life. My dad wasn´t involved with my swimming (or any part of my life) and coach Seagraves made-up for that in spades. I saw him as a great father figure. He helped shape my life as a go-getter with a competitive attitude towards everything I did. I continued on to swim for Eastern Michigan University, which was largely due to Coaches´ support of me and love of competing, which was instilled in me at a very young age. I am now a a Swim Instructor Trainer will never forget my first coach and how he helped shape me into the adult I became.

Mr. Segraves made didn't just coach swimmers, he taught kids important lessons to carry through their lives. I will always remember his quote-of-the-day, his amazing Christmas parties, and the annual Indy 500 race. He always had a smile for each kid and a sparkle in his eye.

Dave was my Best Man at my wedding in June of 1967. We swam together from 1959-1963 at Royal Oak Dondero where we were team captains our senior year. We also roomed together for three years at Western Michigan University. I remember that, at first, Dave was going to be a forester, but Agronomy was his first course and it had to start in darkness; I believe the class began at 5 or 6 a.m. But Dave also was inspired to the maximum by history and the coaching of swimming, which he brought the level of great artistry. A great friend, a great coach, and a wonderful human being.

Dave left a lasting impression on me. He challenged me as a swimmer, I may have challenged him as a coach- who would want to swim when he was belting out amazing Neil Diamond songs? He started every practice with a quote of the day, something to ponder during warm-up, life, and a way to improve yourself. He will be missed and his contributions will be celebrated!

I will always remember Mr. Segraves singing his favorite Christmas tunes while we pounded out the yardage in the pool. Barry Manilow and Neil Diamond seemed to be favorites - Dave made Christmas a year round event! Thanks for the memories! Segraves was definitely my favorite coach teaching me more about life than swimming.
