David did his residency when I worked at MCG . He was the kindest out of all the residents. I alway remember his kindness and sweet spirit. Was talking about the residents I worked with and was looking a few up to see where they were. Ran across this and was so very sad to see this. Sincere condolences to his family.

Cathy and family,
I've thought of David many times over the years and decided to search for him last night on the computer. I was numbed and saddened to read of his passing.
I remember so very fondly living right next door to David and Cathy at Pease AFB and working with David each day in the eye clinic. He was a warm, thoughtful, bright man with a wonderful sense of humor and an easy, calm manner. Everyone who met him immediately warmed to him. David was my peer, but far more than that, he was my friend. And his hallmark was that he left things better than he found them.
I suspect I speak for many when I say that my life was enriched for having known him. May God bless David and keep his soul. And may God bless and comfort you, his family.

Cathy,
Our youngest daughter is teaching school in Virginia not too far from Danville, and I thought I'd search to see if you all were still there. How very sad I was to read of David's death.
We have such fond memories of the gentle doctor he was, and friend from our Bible Study at Pease.
We are in DC again, where Bill is assigned at the Pentagon.
Praying for you and the children.

Dr. Sloan was a wonderful mentor for our VCOM students. His love of teaching and care for the student's professional development was remarkable. Dr. Sloan has taken time out of his busy life to come to Blacksburg to present ophthalmologic evaluation skills labs to our students the last few years. The students always enjoyed the labs and I heard so many positive comments from students on rotation in Danville as well.
He is missed and I and regret your loss.

I am deeply saddened by the loss of Dr. Sloan. He just did eye surgery for me in Feb. He was the most caring doctor I have ever met. He always prayed for me when I was in his office. I know one time I was in his office I had just taken custody of one of my grand daughters. He told me he would pray for me. I will always remember his kindness. The last appointment I had I told him he was a wonderful Dr. My heart is heavy with grief. May God give his family comfort and peace. You all are in my thoughts and prayers.

I have known David since he played tennis for Hillcrest High School. I went to Furman with him, he went to Medical school with my twin brother at MUSC, I did an internship with him in Greenville and then he did his Ophthamology residency at MCG in Augusta when I was doing my residency there. I have not seen him in many years. I was truly inspired by reading all the guest comments here and seeing what a Godly legacy he left. I am glad we will meet again in heaven. My condolences to his family. May God's arms of love surround you as you move through this difficult time.

God bless you in your time of need. Dr. Sloan was my eye doctor and convienced me to have laser surgery done and promised me he could fix my lazy eye. I trusted him and he did a prayer before surgery and everything turned out great. He even sent flowers as a get well gift. I will miss him and don't know where I will ever find another doctor like him. He even saw my daughter a few times. He was truly a wonderful man. I am so sorry for your loss. My prayers are with you.

I am deeply saddened by the the loss of Dr. Sloan. I was just in his office last week and he was so excited about going on a medical mission trip with Anna. I did not personally know the family but my granddaughter graduated with Anna. Dr. Sloan and I talked about the career paths our young ones were taking. He was so proud of his kids and he loved them deeply. I was a patient of Dr. Alverez and right before my surgery he broke his arm and Dr. Sloan agreed to take me on as a patient little did I know at the time how much of a blessing that was going to be. Dr. Sloan had a kind heart and was such a caring and loving man. I have never met a doctor that cared so much about his patients. You could see the love of Christ shine through him and he blessed and encouraged everyone he came in contact with. I was terrified to have my surgery but Dr. Sloan reassured me that I would be fine. He even prayed with me before my surgery not many doctors would do that.He always took the time to talk to his patients and make them feel like they were the only one in the office. Everyone I talked to loved him and only had good things to say about him. Dr. Sloan will be greatly missed here on earth but he left a great legacy behind and he is now in a much better place. My heart is heavy with grief and I feel for the his wife and children. May God grant you all peace and comfort in this time when you need it the most.
Praying for you all!

I am deeply saddened by the loss of Dr. Sloan. He was a GREAT man with a GREAT belief and love for GOD! My late father and grandfather both went to him and loved him. My grandmother had an appointment coming up with him this month. She, too, is upset by this tragedy! Having lost my father when he was only 51, I want to send my deepest sympathy to the family. I know how the children feel. And my father was also my mom's (high school) sweetheart! It is NEVER easy to lose the one's we love and we aren't supposed to question GOD's intention, but it sure is hard not to during times like these, huh? May GOD bring you comfort and peace. I am just sorry I never had the opportunity to meet him- because from what I've been told, he was a WONDERFUL GODLY MAN! And the world lacks people like that nowadays! But to the family: You NOW have a "Guardian Angel" with you FOREVER! May God Bless You All and in "due time" bring you peace and comfort!

Dear Sloan Family,
We are so very sorry about your loss and extend you our deepest sympathy.
We only met Mrs. Sloan and Anna once but Stephen was like our adopted grand-son and we knew Dr.Sloan quite well and feel really grateful for that. He was such an absolutely wonderful man and will be missed by all.
Our hearts are very heavy with grief. May God be with you and may you find peace in all the wonderful memories.
Sincerely,
Dorothy & Bob Jenkins.

Dear Mrs. Sloan and the Sloan Children,
I will continue to send up prayers for each of you on the loss of your husband and father. I ask that God reach down and encircle you with his love, mercy and peace in the days, weeks and months to come. You don't need anyone to tell you, I'm sure, that God's love for each of us is unfailing and does not discriminate.
I knew Dr. Sloan when I worked for an eye care center in Greensboro in the 1990's where he worked part-time in addition to his pracice in Danville. It didn't take long for me to realize that his was an atypical physician's practice. Dr. Sloan put his own signature on his practice. His was a demeanor full of peace and kindliness which obviously came from his personal relationship with God. He melded his skill as a doctor with compassion, core goodness and empathy, and that resulted in something phenomenal.
I remember his quiet and calm presence, but I also learned that when he spoke, I should listen closely. Whether he was giving you instructions to share with a patient or describing something he witnessed on the drive to work, his was a voice which I knew must come from someone with a deep and abiding faith that there is something bigger and greater than us: that something was God.
I haven't kept up with Dr. Sloan after he went to work in Danville fulltime; however, it is apparent that he continued in his faith and fulfilling his God-given gift of healing. As I look back on my own life, I see Dr. Sloan as one of the people whose love for God brought me back to a wonderful relationship with my Lord and Savior. When we are young there are many earthly forces which pull us away from His plan for our lives, but Dr. Sloan surely played a part in helping me to re-start my journey with God. I am now especially thankful that our paths crossed here on earth.
Please accept my sincerest condolences. May the love and compassion that your husband and father extended to others because of his personal relationship with God be a lasting testament to his life and his legacy for his family forever.
Seeking His Plan for Us,
Tollie Mitchell

Dear Stephen, Anna, and Tim (and Cathy),
I was there when your dad fell in love with your mom, since I was one of his roommates at Furman. He was the happiest boy I had ever seen and when I met her and got to know her, I knew that he had found a keeper. And your dad was truly a keeper too. Your dad was one of the finest men I ever knew and one of the best friends I ever had.
I know you will miss him very much, as will I. He will always be an inspiration to me, to live life daily for God as he did so by living life for others. He was so proud of all of you.

Mrs. Sloan and Family:
My condolences to all of you on the passing of Dr. Sloan.
It was a pleasure working with him in the OR at DRMC.
He had a great sense of humor. During hunting season, he would ask which choice of weapon I used, bow or car, as I had a reputation of hitting deer with a car instead of bow.
He truly will be missed.

I only saw Dr. Sloan for a short period of time (2 months) about 6 years ago when my daughter (6 months old at the time) had two serious eye infections. He is the most compassionate person I have ever personally met and I have no doubt that God led my daughter and I to him. He met with my daughter and I in the waiting area before the surgery and prayed with us. WOW! He took being a doctor to a whole different playing field. My heart truly hurts for his family and my prayers are with them all. Hopefully, reading these memories from people the family may not know will help their healing. The world is a dimmer place without Dr. Sloan but at the same time it's wonderful to know that he's now with his Lord!

Dearest Sloan family,
As a human being I am so sorry for your sudden loss, but as a Christian I must rejoice with you that Our Father saw fit to call His servant Home...I suppose His work was completed through the kind Dr. Sloan. He never met me, but he asked my parents about me when he was told I was serving in the Iraq war. What a kind, kind heart! Heaven deserves him more than the cruel world does. I pray fror peace for your entire family during this time.

To the dear Sloan family,
It was my privilege to know Dave at Furman. During our freshman year our rooms were next door. We had many long talks on many subjects. It was clear even then that Dave was a man of deep faith in God who had a great mind and an even greater heart. The loss is great and will continue to be felt in many directions.
Dave was a great blessing to many. He will not be forgotten, nor will the imprint he has left on us all.
My prayer will be that God will walk with you and uphold you as you grieve. May the pain of this time not erase the sure hope that every one who trusts in Christ, will be together again.
Blessings and prayers,

I was truly shocked and saddened when I picked up the newspaper yesterday and learned of Dr. Sloan's death. I only had the honor of meeting him on one occasion but I could immediately see that he was full of heart. When my daughter turned one her eye began to water constantly. Her peditrician referred us to Dr. Sloan. I was very concerned that something was very wrong with her eye. Dr. Sloan examined her and quickly put my mind at ease. He was a great person and my thoughts and prayers are with his family both at home and at Dominion Eye Center.

Dr. Sloan was a kind friend, wonderful physician, and very organized Chair of the DRMC Ethics Committee. Following a tough adoption process, my daughter also needed surgery for severe strabismus. Dr.Sloan and Dr. Alvarez assisted with getting this taken care of. Being taken to Dr. Sloan for care as a young child, she still recalls the funny animals that move and make sounds. Gently easing her fears, Dr. Sloan made quite a lasting impression on this young life, as he has so many others. May God's gentle presence bring comfort during these hours and in days to come.
The peace of Christ be with you,

Dear Cathy, Tim, Anna, and Stephen,
We are truly sorry for your loss. It goes with out saying that David was a very special person. It was obvious that he lived a purposed life and that was to honor God.
Good, kind, gentle, compassionate, peaceful, loving,... all describe his life, a life led by the Spirit.
His life was an encouragement to those who sought to be Godly husbands and Dads. He was a blessing to our church, community, and world. We count ourselves fortunate to have known him. He will be greatly missed.
Know that your family is and will remain in our thoughts and prayers.

Dear Sloan Family:
I had the great pleasure of having a terrible experience at another eye doctor and came to Dr. Sloan as a second opinion. He was so patient and caring and talked to me so calmly and he was the nicest doctor ever - especially when he knew I had such anxiety over having the other eye operated on. For the last two years, he encouraged me to get the other eye done and didn't push when he saw I was terrified. He said he would wait and help me if there came an emergency when he needed to do the surgery on a moments notice. This past January, I expected him to tell me I had to do the surgery and be a little firmer since I had passed on it twice before, but there he was, calm and supportive no matter what I wanted to do. Thanks to him for everything! I hope everyone's fond memories and prayers help you through this difficult time.

To my dearest family, some things I'd like to say...
but first of all, to let you know, that I arrived okay.
I'm writing this from heaven. Here I dwell with God above.
Here, there's no more tears of sadness; here is just eternal love.
Please do not be unhappy just because I'm out of sight.
Remember that I'm with you every morning, noon and night.
That day I had to leave you when my life on earth was through,
God picked me up and hugged me and He said, "I welcome you."
It's good to have you back again; you were missed while you were gone.
As for your dearest family, they'll be here later on.
I need you here badly; you're part of my plan.
There's so much that we have to do, to help our mortal man.
God gave me a list of things, that he wished for me to do.
And foremost on the list, was to watch and care for you.
And when you lie in bed at night, the day's chores put to flight.
God and I are closest to you....in the middle of the night.
When you think of my life on earth, and all those loving years
because you are only human, they are bound to bring you tears.
But do not be afraid to cry; it does relieve the pain.
Remember there would be no flowers, unless there was some rain.
I wish that I could tell you all that God has planned.
But if I were to tell you, you wouldn't understand.
But one thing is for certain, though my life on earth is o'er.
I'm closer to you now, than I ever was before.
There are many rocky roads ahead of you and many hills to climb;
but together we can do it by taking one day at a time.
It was always my philosophy and I'd like it for you too...
that as you give unto the world, the world will give to you.
If you can help somebody who's in sorrow and pain,
then you can say to God at night......"My day was not in vain."
And now I am contented....that my life has been worthwhile,
knowing as I passed along the way, I made somebody smile.
So if you meet somebody who is sad and feeling low,
just lend a hand to pick him up, as on your way you go.
When you're walking down the street, and you've got me on your mind;
I'm walking in your footsteps only half a step behind.
And when it's time for you to go.... from that body to be free,
remember you're not going.....you're coming here to me.

To the family of Dr. Sloan..may the Lord fill your heart with his love grace and mercy. Dr Sloan was a special human being whom we only had for a short time. But his life will be a shining light of hope for you in the days ahead as our God tells us if we love Him we will be reunited with our loved ones who have gone on. My prayers for you go out. To be honest there isnt much I feel i can say cause I know right now this is a devastating thing. But as Abraham Lincoln said as he was getting to leave for Washington as President knowing a civil war was on the horizon...He said "this too shall pass away" May Gods love and comfort be with you always.

Dear Cathy, Tim, Anna, and Stephen,
Please know that you are in my thoughts and prayers. I have the fondest memories of Dr. Sloan during parent conferences and band functions. I was always impressed with his dedication to the education of his children. I know his wonderful legacy will live on, but my heart aches with you for your loss on this earth.

To the family of Dr. Sloan,
We were so very sorry to hear of Dr. Sloan's death. He operated on our twin girls when they were younger and he was so kind and patient with them. Before their surgery, he asked if he could pray with us and from that day on we knew they were in good hands. His kind and calm demeanor were an inspiration to all who talked with him. He will be sadly missed.

Cathy, Tim, Stephen and Anna, I had the pleasure of working with Dr. Sloan for many years. He was so kind and considerate to his patients and employees and a excellent physician. He truly cared for his patients and we are truly better people for having known him. My prayer is that God will hold you all close in the days ahead and give you peace and comfort that only he can give.

Dear Sloan family,
Your loss is both horrible and unbelievable and I wish to extend my sympathy and prayers. I worked with Dr. Sloan, giving the anesthesia for many of his cases, and I loved working with him. He was a superb surgeon, caring and compassionate healer and a true Christian man. It reminds me that none of us have any earthly guarantees, but what a blessing- God's heavenly reward IS guaranteed. Your loss and our loss is surely Heaven's gain.

My parents were patients of Dr. Sloan and they loved him so much that they referred many of their friends in Martinsville to him. My Dad told me that Dr. Sloan was not only a great Doctor and a wonderful person, but had become a good friend. I am grateful that my parents were under his good care and had a opportunity to know him. I join the many people who are holding your family in our thoughts, hearts and prayers.

I met Dr. Sloan when my daughter was a little over a year old. He performed her first surgery in Greensboro and her second surgery at Danville Regional Medical Center. I have never met a more caring doctor. Natasha was more than a file to him. Dr. Sloan did something on that day of the first surgery that has stayed in my heart and mind ever since that day. It was a very emotional time for me. Having my daughter at that have had surgery but Dr. Sloan came into the room and made everyone leave and then he prayed over the surgery and over my daughter. It was then I knew everything would be ok. It was a powerful moment. I have never been so touched in my life. He was a great Christian man. Not many doctors will pray with the patients. He did that both times and I was deeply touched. Dr. Sloan cared so much about everything he did. I will miss him and my heart goes out to his family.

I first met Dr. Sloan when I took my mother, who was in her 90's, to him. He was so patient with her that I became his patient for two cataract surgeries. His prayers were so comforting to me. When I moved to Birmingham, he had Dr. Crews recommend an eye specialist here. His kindness to me and my mother will always be remembered. My sympathy to his family and to Domion Eye personnel.

To the Sloan Family and Dominion Eye Center,
Our thoughts and prayers are with you all and our hearts break for you. Dr. Sloan was my granny's doctor and he was a wonderful Christian man. I think the one thing that impressed me more than anything else was his love for his patients and his love for his Lord. He was a tremendous asset to this community and we have been blessed more than you know by his presence. May God bless you all and may you be comforted in knowing he is rejoicing in Heaven where he spent his time here on earth preparing for!

To Tim and all your family I am so sorry about your loss. I heard about the accident yesterday and Jessica contacted Christopher. Your dad was a great caring person you know you were getting the best of care when you saw him at the office. I wish I could be there for you on Thursday but since I am now working in Lynchburg it is hard to work into my schedule to get back to Danville. God be with you and he will get you through this. We will be praying for you all.

When you hear of such a profound loss, it leaves you at a loss for words as well. My great grandmother was a patient of Dr. Sloan. She was in her early 80's when he operated on her eyes. She had so much good to say about him and his staff. How well she was treated and what a good man Dr. Sloan was. She was especially delighted about the plant she was given.
I know this is such a difficult time for you all. I will lift you up in prayer and ask for God's precious Grace to touch your hearts and keep your thoughts filled with wonderful memories of a wonderful person. God Bless.
