RIP Justice David Souter from a group of admirers in Texas. Your decisions and reasonings were not always in agreement with our politics and jurisprudence (from the attorneys), but your sterling intelligence, friendly demeanor, and defending your reasoning have left many memories to admire. Requieam aeternam, Dnna est, et Lux Perpetua, Et Lucet ais.

So sad to hear of David’s passing. I had the privilege of spending some time with him over the years and his correspondence with my mother was wonderful. The three things I remember most about him was that he was sitting with my grandfather (John Adams) in the nursing home on the day he was confirmed, he always wrote longhand such that any letter from him was deeply personal, and he referred to the capitol building as his barber shop since that is where he got his hair cut.

When my late mother, Karen Moss, retired after many years as the First Circuit Law Librarian, Justice Souter mailed her a heartfelt hand written note. Our family treasures it.
