David Lee Starliper, 79, passed away Thursday, Dec. 30, 2010, at his home, following a brief illness.

He was born Oct. 3, 1931, in Washington County and was the son of the late John and Delilah Hammond Starliper.

He worked for Four States Livestock Market for 48 years in the Hagerstown and Frederick areas.

He was a member of the Hagerstown Church of the Brethren and a past member of the Fairplay Ruritan Club.

Dave was known for his friendly nature and enjoyed his home and family. He had a love of gardening, often giving away crops to his friends and family.

He played baseball in the 1950s with the St. James Bluejays.

He enjoyed working with draft horses and assisted with many horse pulling contests during his younger years.

He enjoyed watching his grandchildren play softball, baseball and football.

He is survived by his loving wife of 56 years, Barbara Duffey Starliper; two children, Lisa Embly and husband, Ron, and Brian Starliper and wife, Tracy; grandchildren, Ronnie and Rebecca Embly and Brady and Dylan Starliper; brother, Irvin "Sonny" Starliper; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by brothers, Lester "Leck" and John "Jack" Starliper; and a sister, Lola McCubbin.

The family will receive friends and family from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 2, at Minnich Funeral Home, 415 E. Wilson Blvd., Hagerstown.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Monday, Jan. 3, at Minnich Funeral Home. The Rev. Edward L. Poling will officiate. Interment will follow the funeral at Cedar Lawn Memorial Park.

Memorial donations may be made to Hospice of Washington County, 747 Northern Ave., Hagerstown, MD 21742.
