David Swerrie Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Apr. 21, 2023.
David Alexander Swerrie, 29, of San Jose, CA, passed away unexpectedly in his sleep on April 15, 2023. His family is heartbroken by his sudden death. David was born on September 3, 1993. David was born at Good Samaritan Hospital in the city of San Jose, where he lived all his life. He graduated from Ann Sobrato High School.

David came out of the womb serious and contemplative. Always thoughtful and introspective, David was a life-long learner. He was intimidatingly smart on a diverse number of topics, and always up for a spirited discussion on virtually anything. David would never back down from a debate, and was exactingly precise in how he expressed himself. His passion for knowledge and understanding was very evident in every communication with him.

David consumed movies and films voraciously. He always had a movie recommendation and it was always a good one. One of his favorites was "Synechdoche, New York". He enjoyed making backyard films with his sister Kyra in childhood, regardless of their quality.

David was passionate about music: weird, nerdy and alternative music. One of his favorite bands was Titus Andronicus, a love he shared with his brother Dominic. They attended a concert together for the first time since the pandemic shortly before he died, and David wore a band shirt he bought there almost continuously after the show. He was proud of it.

David liked computers and video games. He frequently kept in contact with his siblings through online gaming. The night before he passed away, he enjoyed playing "Red Dead Redemption" with his brother Ben and his family.

David had an affinity for sci-fi and fantasy games and content. He enjoyed crafting campaigns for Dungeons and Dragons. In the weekends prior to his death, David was the dungeon master with his brother Marcos and his friends.

There are so many beautiful things about David that are hard to put into words. He could be kind and gentle, passionate and forceful, quiet and sincere. David was a complex human being, sometimes difficult to understand, but he did everything intentionally in his life. He was a little boy that loved Digimon, Hamtaro, and Charmander, and a grown man that enjoyed A's games with his family, Haruki Murakami books, and Norm MacDonald.

David is survived by his mother Colleen Clary and father Erik Swerrie; his brothers Ben Swerrie (Linda Petery), Dominic Cabeca (Lacey Chaffee) and Marcos Herrera; his sister Kyra Swerrie; his niece Mara Sciara; his grandmother Alice Clary; and many aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends: all of whom were special and loved by David.

David was predeceased by his Nana and Grandpa, Dee and Martha Swerrie; his Papa Paul D. Clary III, his cousin Mathew Luce, and his beloved dog Shiro.

The loss of David is enormous, and he will be forever missed by those who knew and loved him.

An informal memorial get-together will be held on Sunday May 7, 2023 at 1PM at Casa Blanca Banquet Hall, 1682 Monterey Hwy, San Jose, CA, 95112.

Donations can be made in David's memory to The SAGE Compassion for Animals Foundation.

Yesterday was a beautiful celebration in honor of David. He leaves such a big hole in your family and our extended family too. It was wonderful seeing his special things (and getting to keep some of) the many photos. Hearing your loving words describing and honoring his uniqueness was beautiful. Thank you for the opportunity to be together with you and honor our love for him and for all of you. You will all be in my prayers as you navigate these waters of grief.

The lovely, funny and sweet stories David's mom would share gave a full picture of what a wonderful and fascinating soul he was. The joy in her face when she talked about him said it all. Cannot fathom the sorrow his family is experiencing to lose such a light.

Such heartache and sadness is so difficult to bear. I am so sorry for the road you are all traveling. Your words paint a loving and beautiful portrait, so uniquely David. I love the pictures too. I feel fortunate to have witnessed David´s tenderness for others on more than one occasion, the light in his smile and his quick and confident wit. I will miss him with you all and I know no one will ever fill the hole his passing has left in your heart. May you each find comfort in the memories you have, the closeness that has always bound your family together, and I pray for healing through your shared tears. With love and sympathy, Christie & Auntie

I sat in the dark in silence to read this beautiful tribute. I didn't feel like I took a breath until I was finished reading. As a mother my heart aches for Colleen's loss. There are no words to describe this pain. As a sister that lost her sibling early my heart aches for David's siblings. My thoughts are with you all.

This is so beautifully written and a wonderful way to describe just a part of the presence and attributes David held in this life. How engaged and caring he was to those around him. He sure knew how to make us feel loved and special and important. This read like a beautiful story and the story of his life and who he will always be is a blessing to have been a part of. This sudden loss of David is devastating and I am heartbroken for you all. May God Bless you and keep you & David in his Loving Arms. Love you.
