I first met Mr. Thorpe when I was about 7 years old ( I am now 64) at the Kotara Methodist Church Boys Group aka Order of Knights. He was very much a positive influence on me thru my years as a member of the "OK's" Nothing was a problem for Mr Thorpe a very generous man especially when about 15 - 20 young boys would put the hard word on him and a few other dads to take us to "Jims" milk bar in Hamilton where he would generously buy us all a milkshake. I lost track of him for many years until I joined Newcastle Sunrise Rotary where unbeknown to me his wife Lyn was a member. Not long after I did meet up with him and we had a good time recalling those early years. I was fortunate to go away with him and Lyn and other Rotary members to the PNG Highlands where we built a number of school rooms. Even at the age of 75 he still had the skill, know how and discipline to construct rooms out of limited materials. A very good man was our Mr Thorpe.
