David Thurston Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Oct. 25, 2017.
December 13, 1946 ~
October 23, 2017
Dave Thurston died in his home in Herriman, Utah during the early morning of Monday, October 23rd, 2017, surrounded by his five children and his wife of just five months, Bette Amundsen Romano Thurston. Dave was a big man. He had a big personality, a big heart, and he made a big impact on a lot of people. He will be deeply missed.
David LeRue Thurston was born on December 13th, 1946 in Richfield, Utah to LeRue E. and Idell Warnock Thurston. He was the second of four siblings. After moving to Provo, Dave attended Grandview Elementary School and then Brigham Young Junior and Senior High School, graduating in 1965. After high school, Dave served a successful mission in the Central British Mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He married Colleen Danielson on June 6, 1969, served in the military in Germany, and later graduated from BYU. He also earned a Master's Degree in Counseling from the University of Phoenix. Dave and Colleen were the parents of five children.
Dave served as an LDS Seminary teacher for 23 years, and inspired thousands of students to have faith and serve others. He always led by example. After leaving the teaching profession, Dave had a second career as a truck driver, retiring just a few months ago. Even in his new profession, "Trucker Dave" found a way to connect with others, extending a helping hand and using the counseling skills that were second-nature to him.
It was Dave's privilege to be married to three wonderful women during his lifetime. Colleen Danielson Thurston-Tippetts, Pam Trude, and Bette Amundsen Romano Thurston. Dave and Bette were married on May 6, 2017 and they were able to enjoy a honeymoon in Kauai, Hawaii before Dave became ill.
Dave is survived by his wife, Bette of Herriman; his sister, Kathy (David) Thornock of Wenatchee, WA; brother-in-law, Dee Johnston of Bartlesville, OK; and sister-in-law, Nancy Flynn Thurston, of Kennewick WA; his five children and their spouses, Jill and Greg Hardman of Washington, UT; Jeff and Veronica Thurston of Midvale, UT; Ryan and Debbie Thurston of Farr West, UT; Amy and Casey Twitty of Eagle Mountain, UT; and Jon and Brittany Thurston of Syracuse, UT; as well as two step children Kristina and Chad Romano Kirby; and Ryan and Heather Romano. Dave is also survived by 21 beloved grandchildren and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Dave is preceded in death by his father and mother, his sister, Ann Marie Thurston Johnston, his brother, Douglas Warnock Thurston, and twin infant grandsons.
A viewing will be held on Thursday, October 26th from 6:00 to 8:00pm at the Copper Creek 2nd Ward Building (4080 West 12600 South) in Riverton. The funeral service will be held at the same address on Friday, October 27th at 11:00am. Graveside services/Interment will follow immediately after at Riverton City Cemetery. Im so sorry, I just learned of his passing. I looked him up on FB and noticed it is a memorial page now. It broke my heart to see that. He was my seminary teacher at Hillcrest and was one of THE BEST!! I have a pic with him on the last day of school. My friend and I even wore our moms wedding rings and went and visited him and told him we had gotten engaged shortly after graduating. Trying to trick the trickster! What a fun memory. Im sorry for your loss.

We were stunned to hear that our dear friend had passed away. We have so many fond memories of Bishop Thurston and Colleen in our Riverton ward.
He had such a passion for the youth and spent many an hour pulling them together in friendship and service.
He always had some ridiculous prank waiting to be tried. One such time was when he visited our YW camp. He gave me (Camp Director), permission to lace a "snake" (knotted) rope under his daughter Jill's tent/ sleeping bag. We talked snake sightings all day and by nightfall these girls were zipped TIGHT in their tent....NOTHING WAS GETTING IN!....or out, for that matter.
A young beehive approached the door to "borrow" something from her sister, and immediately yelled SNAAAAAKE!!!!
Upon hearing that, the YW who were lined up behind the tent gave a big pull on the knotted rope. That's all it took for the 3 girls zipped inside the tent to panic and start batting and tearing at the locked up tent. It was just like you'd see in cartoons
It was hysterical...Jillybean was hysterical...her dad was hysterical...though for completely different reasons...and the other girls were hysterical. I seriously thought I was going to die from laughing so hard. Good times!
Dave could always make everyday things fun, crazy spiritual and uplifting all at the same time.
We send our condolences and love to his sweet family, children and grandchildren. He was a good man.

So sorry to hear of the passing of Dave. I worked with him at Hillcrest Seminary and saw him change the lives of many students who were struggling. He was truly a great man.

Dear Thurston siblings, I am so very sorry for your loss! My family loves your dad, and entire family so much! I remember rolling into Riverton in our moving van, and your Dad and Jeff were instantly at our side, helping us move in. What an incredible example of service. I remember laughing until I cried many times in the Thurston house. Love and prayers to all of you!❤❤

Oh Betty...I am so sorry that you had such a short bit of earthly time with your sweetheart. He sounds like such a wonderful man and he is so lucky to have had you to help him through these past few months. Randy and I have both had you in our thoughts since running into you at Swiss Days. Please know that our prayers are with you through this difficult time!
With much love and admiration,

Dave was an amazing man. He knew how to really love others. He was loved by so many. He was such a great influence in my life. I loved having conversations with him about life. He was an important part of my life. He spoke at my mission farewell. He came to my wedding. He is and always will be a true friend. He was full of love for others. The best teacher I have ever had. In seminary and in life. He will be missed.
