David Tomlinson Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Sep. 25 to Sep. 26, 2007.
TOMLINSON, David Allan December 14, 1933 - September 18, 2007 On September 18, 2007, David Tomlinson died after a short illness. David is survived by his wife Judith, daughter Sarah (Antony) Fitschen, granddaughter Evangeline Fitschen, brother James (Helen) Tomlinson, nieces Cindy (Jack) Tetz and Jill Tomlinson, and grandnephews Daniel and Thomas Tetz. David was born in Fort William, Ontario, and grew up in Ear Falls in the Red Lake district of Ontario; McReary, Manitoba; and Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan. He served in the Canadian Army for six years, two of them in Germany with the army of occupation. He served in the RCAF as a radio officer and navigator for seven years, during which he was stationed on both the east and west coasts. From 1967 to 1989, he ran the electron microprobe laboratory in the Department of Geology at the University of Alberta. In 1984, he was instrumental in forming the National Firearms Association of Canada, and he served as national president from 1984 to August 2000 and from February 2005 until his death. He was well-known in the firearms community for his encyclopaedic knowledge of firearms and firearms history, and acted many times as an expert witness for the defence. His detailed knowledge of firearms legislation in Canada was invaluable in many firearms court cases. Cremation has taken place. A gathering to remember Dave will be held on Saturday, September 29, 2007, at 2:00 p.m. at the Freemasons Hall, 10318 - 100 Avenue, Edmonton. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Canadian Cancer Society, the SPCA, or the charity of your choice would be appreciated.

Judith & family: Our sincerest and deepest condolences to you and your family in the passing of David. David will be sadly missed by those who knew him. The gun fraternity has lost the strongest single individual advocating firearms rights in history. David's effect will never be duplicated. This supported by his vast knowledge on these issues. The family and the gun fraternity will miss him. May he rest in peace.
