I only heard today that David passed. That is very sad. My sincere condolences to his family.

I met Dave years ago on a ski trip to the Columbia Icefields with the Alpine Club of Canada. Over the following years, we enjoyed many climbs together, as well as a sailing trip to the San Juan Islands on the "Opabin". Dave counselled me, and encouraged me, to apply to law school, which led to a very enjoyable career as a lawyer. Eventually I saw less of Dave, and I am very sorry to have learned so late of his passing. The world has lost a great person. I will miss him.

Dave always welcomed me to visit or stay with him. He helped me through both marriage and divorce. Such a loving and happy man. It was a joy to be around him, active or in silence.
And what amazing muffins.

I knew David through Alberta Vipassana Foundation, and our last conversation was about some books he generously donated to our centre. It was always a pleasure to attend group sits at his home. Reading about his many accomplishments, I can say he was truly humble and it's clear why so many people adored him. My condolences to Valerie and their collective extended family. He is one among all beings, and may he be truly happy, peaceful and liberated.

Than Than Myint
I don't think Mr Vallance passed away. He is resting in a peaceful place the same as my mom. 2009 2015 2017 are the years that I cannot forget in my whole life. You made cry. It is unbelieveable. How can I forget your kindness and sense of humour Mr Vallance? You made me laugh eventhough I was angry .Your encouragement made me strong during my difficult times and living alone in Calgary. You behaved as my father and teacher. We were vice versa.
Can I talk to you again pls?I would like to see your handwriting. I had never thought that we would know each other as a client and a lawyer. I invited you to come and visit to Myanmar because I wanted you to take time off and relax.I wanted you to escape from sitting in front of the computer.
I am really sorry for your entire family and your beloved children and grandchildren. They are going to miss you.
YOU ARE AlWAYS IN MY HEART .YOU ARE MY GREAT FRIEND AND LAWYER.

What a complex, accomplished, and profoundly human man he was. The world is a much sadder place without his curious mind and his generous heart.

Every conversation that I ever had with David was marked with warmth and earnest energy. David had much to say about life and the law. David was especially proud when speaking of his children and grandchildren. I offer my sincere condolences to his entire family and especially to his children, Meghan, Matthew, and Patrick. He will be greatly missed by many.

David was a marvellous teacher. Thanks to him I learned how to operate cutting edge technology in the form of an Apple and how to support his family law practice.. The world has lost an honourable man and lawyer. Condolences to his family and friends.

David was really excited to focus his practice on mediation, DRO and collaboration as well as share his wisdom and years of experience being a third generation lawyer.
The dispute resolution community has a huge void. You will be missed. Thank you for being my friend and colleague.

David was the type of lawyer and mediator that you wanted young lawyers to learn from. He exhibited the best that our profession offers: commitment, honour, compassion, perspective, and generosity. His mentorship will be missed by all who knew him.

David and I enjoyed many good times together, skiing, hiking, and working together to build the Alpine Club of Canada and Nordic ski racing in Canada. Nordic ski training camps in the 1980's and early 1990's always provided hours of "back on bed recovery time" which enabled great conversations that never ended.
I will miss his passion, energy and intellect.
God bless you Dave.

David was a close friend for over 40 years - hiking, climbing, and sailing together across Alberta and BC with our families. He was a driving force behind the construction of the Canadian Alpine Centre in Lake Louise, and served on both the CAC Board and on the Board of the ACC for many years. He will be missed.

Dave was the rare kind of person who shapes your destiny in ways that ultimately become a part of who you are. I am forever grateful for his ongoing and unwavering support without which my son may have been lost forever. He was a heroic figure in my life.

I reflect on my memories of David and realize they are too many to count, whether it be it be sailing in the San Juan islands or simply camping in Banff. As part of my family landscape for close to forty years, the overall theme of my memories was his passion. His willingness to try something new and give it his full concentration. Always willing to answer legal questions, no matter how simplistic. David, you will be missed. Heartfelt condolences to his immediate family.

I worked for David 30 years ago. He had a ton of energy and took his clients' needs to heart.

Once David escorted me down a steep slope with his ice axe and put me behind like we were tobogganing. Quite the gentleman.

I kept in touch through the Alpine Club. In order to have the Canadian Alpine Centre built David was instrumental in establishing the relationship with the Hostelling Association. He was like a bulldog negotiating. Quite a legacy.

Later he and Mike Basham became serious skI competitors. They were fiercely competitive with each other.

I'm sorry you've lost your husband and dad. I'm sure David would be a proud Grampa.

What I am probably going to remember most about David is that over the last few years whenever we would run into each other at a legal education conference or some other event he would often hug me like a brother. - Doug Moe
