David Wancata Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Aug. 21, 2024.
West Chester - David John Wancata, 74, passed away on Aug. 2 in Cincinnati following a battle with cancer. He was born in Cleveland, Ohio, to Ethel and George Wancata, the sixth of 13 children. He is preceded in death by his parents and brothers Jackie and Dennis. His brother Tom followed David in death within hours of his passing. David is survived by his siblings, George, Elaine, Joyce, Kathy, Lynn, Carole, Jim, Jeff and Bruce. He also leaves behind many nieces and nephews, including two godchildren.

A 1968 graduate of Independence High School where he lettered in three sports, David went on to Miami University, alternately attending school and working to put himself through college. He was a proud member of the Sigma Nu fraternity. Graduating in 1975 with a degree in teaching, he was the first member of his family to earn a college degree, which he followed with a master's degree in Administration from Xavier University in 1982.

David had a successful career as a teacher, administrator and coach at various schools in the Cincinnati area. He began his career at Fairfield High School, teaching business and serving as assistant football coach. At Lockland High School, he was an assistant principal and head football coach. Over seven seasons, he guided the Panthers to two undefeated seasons and multiple state tournament appearances while earning Coach of the Year honors. He also served as dean of students at Mason Junior High before retiring in 2007, though he returned to fill interim positions in the Milford ISD and New Miami ISD before officially retiring in 2009.

David was a selfless and kind person who did much for others without wanting recognition in return. He touched the lives of his students and players in simple but important ways, such as by providing ties to wear on game days for players who couldn't afford them and taking game uniforms home to launder for students whose home circumstances prevented them from being able to do so themselves. He stayed in touch with many of his students beyond graduation, often following their careers and making himself available to them as a mentor.

After retiring, David volunteered at the New Life Mission in Hamilton. He was a lifelong blood donor and a longtime member of Saint John the Evangelist Church in Fairfield, where he attended services regularly. He was an avid NASCAR fan and enjoyed golfing and bicycling. A lifetime Cleveland Browns fan, David was a season ticket holder who often gave away his tickets so that others could enjoy the experience. He had a great sense of humor and infectious smile and was a loyal friend. He maintained close relationships with his Sigma Nu brothers throughout his life.

A mass will be held at 11 a.m., Wednesday, Sept. 4, at St. Michael Catholic Church, 6912 Chestnut Road, Independence, Ohio, followed by a burial service at St. Lawrence Cemetery, 4511 Rockside Road in Independence. A luncheon in his honor will follow immediately at Vodrazka Funeral Care, 6505 Brecksville Road, Independence.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to New Life Mission (https://missionhamilton.org) or Hospice of Cincinnati Blue Ash (www.hospiceofcincinnati.org).

I played football and basketball with Dave at Independence High School (Ohio) in the late 1960s. Then during summer break, we were laborers together at the Great Lakes Fence Company, both making $1.75 an hour. At the time, it seemed like a lot of money. I did not have a car back then, so Dave drove us to work in his brother's Corvette. Talk about two teenagers riding in style !!! After work, we would get a six-pack of 3.2% Strohs beer and drive around Elmwood Park. After Dave graduated, he relocated to southern Ohio and I rarely saw him again. But I will never forget those days of youth when we felt invincible and life was an unfolding adventure. Rest in peace, my dear old friend.

I was a teacher and counselor at Mason Middle while Dave was an assistant principal. What a great guy! He was always worried about what he could do to help the school and the students! I´ll always remember his joyful smile! Rest easy Dave!

Well Cuda, what great tributes are coming your way. From freshman year at Miami all the way through to our final meeting weeks before your passing you were a great friend to me. Always down to earth, humble, and a great sense of humor. You always held your family and friends close to your heart. We will hold you and your memory close to ours. Truly and life well lived.

My sincerest condolences and prayers on the passing of Dave and Tom. Dave and I played CYO sports together at St. Michael's. I have some of the same thoughts and memories about Dave and the Wancata family shared here by others. I would add that Dave made an impression on others. Regrettably, Dave and I did not remain in contact after grade school as we attended different high schools. Many of our opponents from our CYO days still ask me about Dave Wancata. Dave made an impression - a good impression - on others through sports and shared in these posts, in life. Rest in Peace Dave, Tom and Dennis.

Cruising on warm summer nights in big brother Dennis´ `68 Corvette, sweeping the floors of the local barber shop after school, altar boy at St. Michael´s, playing basketball on "fog day", always "extra fries" at McDonald´s on Rockside road- and sports- baseball, basketball, and football-what an athlete! We lost touch after college and that now becomes a life´s regret. Condolences to the Wancata family. You all were a big part of growing up in Independence, and I am forever grateful for your friendship.

I really am not even sure what to say here. Saying you will be missed, what a great man you were, how much you were loved, how selfless you were - none of it seems enough. Anyone that knew you, knows what you were about. I am grateful I could help YOU these last few months. You were a GREAT big brother! Always there to help and support. One thing that helps me deal with you being gone is you are out of that terrible pain. Rest easy big brother. Continue watching over us. I love you and miss you always.

Additional thoughts. First, sorry for your recent loss of Tommy. He was always his own man.
RIP Mrs Wancata, Dennis & Jackie. David's passing made me think of my family, but more importantly David's friendship & the Wancata family, because they were intertwined. David was first & foremost a Wancata. Mrs. Wancata was a determined, but gentle spirit. Her co-captains were Dennis & Joyce. They provided heart, grit but mostly a love of laughter. I recall an occasion when my family went to pick up David for a basketball game. St Michael's was to play Parmadale at halftime of a Cleveland Pipers game at the old Cleveland Arena on Euclid Ave. It was big stuff at the time. David had disappointed Dennis in someway & was not allowed to go. I remember thinking at the time, "Oh wow, that's tough". The next time I saw Dennis he had a big grin on his face & was laughing & joking with David & me. Dennis laughed alot. Today they call that tough love. Then, it was just Dennis, being Dennis. I knew David would make it, after I witnessed him surviving the brotherly love battle royales in their upstairs bedroom. Jimmy had a little Clint Eastwood in him, but David always held his own. As for entertainment, look no further than the Wancata TV room, where the family action was more entertaining than the actual TV programs. I think the family got a couple of Emmy nominations! It was also where Joyce held court. She was judge, jury & executioner. But mostly she was laughing. There's so much more, but you get the idea. Thanks David & the Wancata family for a front row seat.

We played football together at St Michael´s in Independence. We both played quarterback and fullback and our coach,David´s father Mr George Wancata, would alternate our positions depending on who we were playing and the play that was called.
He always put a genuine feeling of friendship and loyalty into the St Michael´s team and the game we were playing. His smile was incredibly infectious and warm. To sum him up in two words.....GREAT GUY!
NO ONE like him!

As kids, we were best friends. David honed his cooking skills, before his morning paper route, with his famous French toast. Secret ingredient, flour. He would later go on to pour ketchup on his fries & burger at Pleasant Valley Manners restaurant. Lots of ketchup! David was like a family member, in helping my dad run the Independence Rec Program, Elmwood indoor basketball gym, St Michael's bizarre & Peanuts basketball for 2nd graders at Marycrest school. David loved Independence. Loved Independence High School. You could see David becoming a coach & principal in Southern Ohio from as far away as...Independence. There better be a team up there for him to coach! David was a good guy. And a good friend.

Glad we had a chance to talk before you passed away. Only because of the grace of God I decided to call to arrange to meet in Sarasota now that we are in Tampa. When you told me you wouldn't be making that trip I didn't realize it was God who told me to call David to say good by. We all carry a piece of David Wancata in our hearts.

Dave actually saved my life! 21 September 1979 while waiting for our football team's game my self and another individual were horseplaying and I ran through a plate glass door. Coach hearing the screaming and hollering grabbed a pile of towels and ran upstairs to the gymnasium and proceeded to administer first aid. Coach Wancata proceeded to make a tourniquet in an attempt to stop the bleeding. In all this chaos Coach stayed calm cool and collected, reassuring me that I was going to be okay. Without a doubt Coach Dave Wancata saved my life. This was not a minor cut either, lost six units of blood, cut all the main arteries in my right arm and cut 90% of the nerves in my arm also. Coach Dave was definitely my guardian angel on earth and I pray for his family at this difficult time. Coach Dave soar high my friend you are no longer burdened by that terrible disease and the troubles of this life. God Bless you and keep you until we meet again.

I got to know Dave (aka Cuda) over the decade or so through golf. He was an incredibly kind man with a positive outlook on life. His energy was amazing and he found more golf balls in 18 holes than most people would find in a year! His golf buddies will miss him.

My condolences to his family and friends.

As a Lockland alumni who was in school during the 90´s, I was blessed to have been able to watch this man lead our boys through several successful football seasons.
The influence he had on not only his players but everyone around him is something that only a few special people will achieve in life. He wasn´t just our assistant principal or coach. In many ways he was a father, mentor, friend and just all around great human.
RIP Coach

I only remember getting 1 detention from Mr. Wancata and it was because I was chewing gum on the way to lunch & I had been warned prior. Always stood outside the auditorium doors at the top of the steps and never without those detention slips but with a big happy grin on his face!
He was so nice but also scary too.
My dad and I used to lift weights with him late evenings so those were the times I remember mostly just
talking and he wasn´t a threat to me then. Mr. Wancata was an incredible man always with a happy smile even when giving detentions and an incredible mentor, even to the ladies at Lockland. You´ll be missed Mr. Wancata.

As a long time family friend i could only smile reading David´s Obituary. He was so classy and always kind but much of his life i never really knew. It´s very apparent that he touched tens of thousands of lives as great coaches and teachers often do. I love the Wancata family. They are the Pride of the city of Independence. I was privileged to speak with David a few days before he went to meet Jesus. As St. Paul stated "David has fought a good fight, he has finished his course and he kept the FAITH". After speaking with him there is no doubt in my mind
