David Wanklyn Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Oct. 26 to Oct. 28, 2008.
OBITUARY DAVID IRVINE WANKLYN August 3, 1924 - October 24, 2008 We are sad to announce the death of our beloved David on October 24, 2008. He leaves his wife Patience and children William, Virginia (Derek Wilson) and Susan; grandchildren and great-grandchildren David, Charles, Alicia, Leah, Jordan, Mia and Lukas; predeceased by his brother Christopher and sister Priscilla Campbell. David was born in Montreal. He attended Selwyn House School, Bishop's College School, and McGill University where his studies were interrupted by the war. He served as a gunner in the XII Manitoba Dragoons in Belgium and Holland. After the war he won a Rhodes scholarship and attended Trinity College, Oxford until 1949 where he studied nuclear physics. His research continued on the cyclotron at McGill where he received a PhD in nuclear physics in 1951. David worked as an industrial engineer for St. Lawrence Sugar Refinery and Redpath Consultants International. He believed in community service, and sat on a variety of Boards, including as chair of Miss Edgar's and Miss Cramp's School Board of Directors, and on the board of the Montreal Children's Hospital. David was a long-time member of the Royal St. Lawrence Yacht Club, and his converted fishing trawler was appointed "committee boat" for the annual Canadian Olympic Training Regatta, and for the summer Olympic Sailing Events in Kingston in 1976. He and Patience retired to Kingston Ontario in 1981, where he designed and built 2 steamboats, attended and organized steamboat regattas, and assisted with the Kingston Steam Museum. His first steamboat, Entropy, was a source of great pleasure for family and friends. After a long, active and engaged life, Entropy overtook David and he slipped into dementia in his eighty-first year. We are grateful for the loving care he received at Westmount One over the past 2 years. Special thanks to his devoted care-givers Alicia, Yvette, Ken, Chantal, as well as to the many other kind attendants under the empathetic management of Steve, Carol and Flo. A reception for friends and family will be held at Mount Royal Commemorative Services at the Mount Royal Cemetery, on Wednesday, October 29, 2008 at 3 p.m.

Hi Patience, Willy, Ginny & Susie

My sympathies.

it's been a long time. i've just been through the loss of my first parent and it was not easy. I had not seen TURKEY since i was maybe 18 years old. My memories are primarily of Gregor's by the Sea. Fond memories of lots and lots and lots of joking around.

Wednesday is not a good day for me - i have commitments here in north hatley. I would have liked to connect with all of you again.

Take care
Be well
Stephen

My thoughts are with Mrs Wanklyn, Willie, Ginny and Susie today. I have such wonderful memories of trips on the Edward W (and painting the hull!) and great parties on Thornhill Avenue with all of you. I am sorry I am not able to be in Montreal on Wednesday. My sympathy and love to you all.
