Thank you for the kind of friendship that kids have, even though we were 19 and 21 years old. My memories are of silly stories told over toothbrushing in the shared bathrooms - you so overcome with laughter that you couldn't speak. How I valued that friendship, in a time when I was only beginning to know what friendship was. We could not possibly have come from more opposite places in life, and yet I glimpsed through you, what it was like to have grown up loved, and beginning to know your own value as you moved out into the world by yourself. I'm sure that was a big factor in your readiness to be a friend to "the odd one", and to be ready to go for a run at all hours, and to be open to conversation on any topic, with depth, honesty and humourous self-reflection.

(This is probably not the place to mention in front of your dear mum, my recollection of your astonishment when I emerged from the linen room with clean sheets under my arm, in the last month or so of our first year. You wanted to know where I'd got them from, during which explanation you confessed that you hadn't changed your sheets since you'd arrived. I can't remember how we resolved that, but we were still firm friends, so it can't have been an issue.)

My sincerest condolences go to your family, to Jane, your mum and sisters, and your wider circle of friends in Zurich and around the world. You are irreplaceable in our hearts, and rest among my most treasured friends.

Dear Christiane, Anna, Radha and Gabrielle, I was shocked and saddened to read of David's untimely passing. Our thoughts and prayers are with you all at this very sad and difficult time.
