WINCH, David Monk, B.Sc. (Economics), (L.S.E.) Ph.D., (L.S.E.) M.A., (Cambridge) F.R.S.C.
Peacefully, at home in Burlington, surrounded by his loving family, on Sunday, February 3, 2002, in his 69th year. Special friend of Bernadette Lynn. Loving father of Elizabeth Yurkiw and her husband Roger of Beamsville and Alex Winch and his wife Celia Smith of Toronto. Much loved grandfather of Christopher McAloney, Jennifer and Robert Yurkiw, Harrison and Gordon Winch. Dear brother of Vernon Winch of England. Predeceased by his parents, Alexander and Lily Winch of England. David retired from his position as Professor of Economics in 1989 and was granted the title Professor Emeritus (as he always said, his only promotion in 23 years of tenure at Mac). David held previous academic positions at the Universities of Toronto, Saskatchewan and Alberta and was Commonwealth Fellow at St. John's College Cambridge. He was the recipient of numerous scholarships and fellowships, such as the Killam Award and Canada Council Fellowship. He was elected Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada in 1977. His academic service at McMaster included six years as Chairman of the Economics Department, Member of the Board of Governors, Senate, Graduate Council, and Social Sciences Faculty Council. He served on committees of the Council of Ontario Universities, the Association of Universities and Colleges of Canada, was on the Executive of the Canadian Association of University Teachers and the Ontario Confederation of University Faculty Associations. He was a member of the Canadian Economics Association and served as Vice President and member of the Executive. He is well remembered for his work with the McMaster University Faculty Association, serving on numerous Executives and as President of the Association in 1981-2. He was a member of the Ontario Economic Council from 1973-83 and worked as an advisor to the Ontario government on many economic issues. David will be dearly missed by his family and friends, especially for his quick wit and his ability to analyze and understand even the most complex problems. The family would like to thank all the staff at the Caroline Medical Centre and others who helped David in his illness, but especially the kind and dedicated service of the Halton VON who made David's last journey comfortable. A Celebration of David's Life will be held at McMaster University
Faculty Club Great Hall, 1200 Main Street West, Hamilton on Wednesday, February 13, 2002 from 4-6 p.m. Private interment. If desired, expressions of sympathy to the Canadian Cancer Society would be sincerely appreciated by the family. (Arrangments entrusted to SMITH'S FUNERAL HOME, BURLINGTON 905-632-3333)
