David Winter Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Sep. 13, 2022.
David Mark Winter entered the arms of Jesus peacefully, Tuesday, September 6th 2022, at Good Shepherd Hospice in Sebring, Florida, with two of his children at his side.

David was born on his family's kitchen table during a snowstorm March 3rd in the year of our Lord 1941, in the town of Bloomfield, Wisconsin.

After graduating from Fox Valley Lutheran High School, he worked the family farm and was a cheese maker for a year at a local cheese factory before joining the Army.

David served in Southern France at Hospital Headquarters and enjoyed touring over 100,000 miles of Europe during his time there. He returned on vacation later in life and hoped to do so again.

After returning to Wisconsin, he began his 38-year career in Railroad Administration with employment at The Milwaukee Road in Horicon and Green Bay, Chicago & Northwestern in Green Bay, Milwaukee, and Chicago, along with Union Pacific in Chicago and Omaha.

David married Penelope Hardt on May 8, 1965. Although their marriage was not permanent, they raised four children and were blessed with four grandchildren as well as five great-grandchildren.

David was passionate about politics and spent many years as Clerk for The Town of Lawrence and as Chairman for The Town of Bloomfield.

Even after retiring in sunny Florida, David returned to Wisconsin as often as possible to 'Family Deer Camp' in November for camaraderie and to pursue that thirty-point buck before The Green Bay Packers kick off.

Over the years, David filled his spare time painting, woodworking, bowling, fishing, dancing, playing keyboards & singing, listening to country music, card games, going on the weekly 'dump run' with friends, eventually thrifting, collecting, and holding rummage sales.

He was active in The American Legion, a member of The Moose Club, and supported several charities including helping many people that were unable to help themselves.

David is preceded in death by his parents, William F. and Rose (Radtke) Winter; sisters Lois Willard and Nola Jean Higginbotham; brother William Winter; many extended family members, friends, and furry companion Sadie.

David, aka Papa/Pappy, is survived by his children Mary Winter, Melissa (Pat) Erickson, Melinda Winter, and Mark (Tracey) Winter; grandchildren Katryna (Guesippie) DeLeon, Ashley (Kyle) Ferguson, Henry Erickson, and Tyler Winter-Vogley; great-grandchildren Priscylla Winter, Riccardo DeLeon, Penelope DeLeon, Rita Ferguson, and James Ferguson; along with nieces, nephews, cousins, and one remaining aunt.

The family wishes to thank the staff at Good Shepherd Hospice as well as Pastor Dave Thoreson for assisting David in a peaceful transition to his heavenly home.

David requested a private celebration of life to be held at a future date. In lieu of flowers, do what David did ... enjoy life to the fullest.

I just found our today that my cousin Dave passed away. I had a lot of cousins and most of them have passed so I don't have much contact with the family since I live in AZ. Dave and I were only a year apart in age. I saw quite a bit of him when we were younger. I'm so sorry that your Dad is no longer with you but you will be with him in heaven someday. My sympathy to you all, Kay Schumann

I know this is a great loss for your family that I have got to know well in the last 24 years. Now you and Penny can watch over everyone and give them guidance. I'm glad we were able to share conversations, cards and the children.
